Botanica: Contemporary Art Outside ran at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens between 12-21 May 2023. Ten large-scale installations, ranging from sculpture and projections through to augmented reality and interactive creations transformed the gardens into an outdoor gallery. This is Vestigia Arborum by Soma Lumia Find out more about the artwork: Like pristine natural systems, this light-based installation is impacted directly by the number of people visiting. Fusing human interaction with technology, the art will change as more people view it. The title Vestigia Arborum, resembling Latin binomial classification, refers to both ‘garden’ and ‘traces’ of something that once existed but is no more. The expansive entwined branches of the tree perform as a canvas of the work, reminding us of the living tangible and cumulative impact of human actions on this fragile and precious planet. Artist biography Tasmanian tech art collective Soma Lumia is a tech-art collective based in lutruwita (Tasmania) founded in 2015, dedicated to questioning the relationship between humans and nature, perception and the illusory, actual and virtual. Their work delivers considered, playful and moving experiences that help us understand what it means to be human on this fragile and precious planet. Known for its distinctively hybrid media-based arts practice, Soma Lumia investigates the boundary between what is real and what is not, what is authentic and what is counterfeit; it navigates this through questioning the relationship between humans and nature, perception and the illusory, actual and virtual. When you walk along the coast in Darwin's and look out over beautiful sunset views, do you ever wonder what lies beneath the surface? A wealth of war history remains under the seas and on land in Darwin and the surrounding areas. Go back in time and experience Darwin through the day of the first Japanese air raid attack on Australia, with the @abcaustralia Bombing of Darwin Walking Tour. Prior to the bombing raid of 19 February 1942, most civilians had been evacuated and this option was offered to the Post Office staff but they chose to stay. Peter Bald the Postmaster and his family lived near the Post Office and had built an air raid shelter in their back garden for use by the family and the Post Office staff. Soon after the first raid on Darwin began the female telephonists and several male members of the staff sought shelter there. A bomb scored a direct hit on the shelter killing the postmaster, his family, together with several members of his male staff and the whole of the female staff. In all, ten postal and communications workers were killed. The bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, was one of the most significant events in Australia's history during World War II. On February 19, 1942, Japanese aircraft launched a surprise attack on the city of Darwin, located in Australia's Northern Territory. The bombing of Darwin was the largest and most destructive attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australian soil. In this video, relive the bombing of Darwin, including the lead-up to the attack, the tactics used by the Japanese, and the aftermath of the assault through those that experienced it first hand.
