The Rising of the Shield Hero Made Me Angry and I love It.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Made Me Angry and I love It. A loveletter to Malty Myne Melromarc.

Queen Cersei, Dolores Umbridge, Shou Tucker, and Myne, from Rising of the Shield hero. Tell me, which of these monstrosities do you hate the most, I’ll give you a couple of seconds.

You’re absolutely right. It’s myne.

To be fair, I hate them all, loathe them in fact. They are such excellently well written characters, designed to make your skin crawl. And If I had to pick the worst of the bunch it would be the pathological liar, Myne.

Rising of the Shield hero was a breakout anime series in the winter 2019 season coming off the back of a web novel to light novels to manga to anime adaption. So, let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series is in an isekai setting.

My isekai roots run deep. Back in 2003, one of the first anime series young anime fried chicken watched was HAck: // Sign and the first manga I had bought (unfortunately was HAck: / /legend of the twilight). Similarly to rising of the shield hero, the premise was someone who had been sucked into an mmorpg. And back in 2003, in a time of dreadfully slow internet speeds and internet gaming not being not quite as culturally accepted as it is today, mmorpg iskai animes weren’t particularly common.

And this concept of escapism layered in escapism, an mmorpg fairing protagonist in my anime, was thrilling. This coupled with my excitement for world of warcraft being released in the following year of 2004 and Guildwars in 2005, sums up a lot of my childhood and what shaped me into the person I am today. These MMO anime series were, needless to say, a far cry from the bastardised isekai shows we are subjected to in the current era.

But the trash tier isekai plague of our generation is not why I am angry today, no. My unbridled rage is targeted solely towards Malty “ Myne” Melromarc. A tragic story of underhanded betrayal towards our main character, Naofumi.

So why am I so damn angry? This tale of misfortune isn’t happening to ME personally, so how can this work illicit such a powerful reaction? Cast your mind to protagonists of hugely successful games, for example Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7, or Link from any of the Zelda titles. They don’t speak, ever. A blank canvas for you and me to reflect ourselves onto and become enveloped into the world the game designers painstakingly created for us. The more you become immersed into their landscape, the connections you have formed with supporting characters become more meaningful, and you yourself become more invested in the wellbeing of your avatar.

So say when the protagonist, an extension of your self, is accused on sexual assault, stripped of wealth and power, becomes unable to fight for himself due to reasons be
