International Conference on Men’s Issues (2020) – promotional video #2
THIS VIDEO IS BEST APPRECIATED WEARING HEADPHONES.
In the next couple of weeks we'll be announcing plans for the International Conference on Men's Issues (2020). It's going to be, in the words of the song:
Simply the best. Better than all the rest.
Our thanks to Tom Caulfield, our Technical Director, for creating this video.
Philip was the author of "Abused Men – The Hidden Side of Domestic Violence" (1997, Praeger) and the co-author of "When Women Sexually Abuse Men – The Hidden Side of Rape, Stalking, Harassment and Sexual Assault" (2013, Praeger) with criminologist Tammy Hodo, PhD. He is the co-author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals including "The Journal for Human Behavior in the Social Environment", and other such publications.
Sean is the President of the non-profit organization Global Initiative for Boys and Men. He is an educator, writer, researcher, fund-raiser, and community engagement organizer. His interest in boys’ and men’s representation in media, academic, and policy action comes from his many years of teaching in the public and private sectors and research into gender reporting and public policy.

This video is one of 120 videos published for the sixth International Conference on Men's Issues (2020), a conference originally planned for Sydney, Australia, but later turned into a virtual conference due to Covid-19.
From #metoo to the American Psychological Association’s guidelines pathologizing “masculinity” as harmful, to Gillette’s razor adverts blaming all men for the actions of a damaged few, ideologically motivated groups have used unchallenged narratives of female victimhood to promote damaging stereotypes about men and boys, masculinity and men’s relationships to each other.
More than ever before, recognition of men’s issues is needed. Men and boys deserve compassion, they deserve consideration for their unique needs, and they deserve our support.
Men and boys also deserve respect for their unique contributions to society and an end to the promotion of unkind stereotyping of being harmful, abusive, toxic, selfish and hateful. We would not tolerate this stereotyping directed towards any other group.
We are in an era of unprecedented ideological conflict. By reducing men’s ability to take a positive identity from their masculinity we are encouraging young men to pursue ever more radical ideologies to find a place to belong. In turn we are also encouraging young women to embrace an identity as society’s victims rather than its equal co-creators.
The inaugural conference was held in 2014, and since 2016 the conference has been held annually:
- Detroit (2014)
- London (2016)
- Gold Coast, Australia (2017)
- London (2018)
- Chicago (2019)
Playlists of all 100+ presentations at the conferences (and this one) are here, as well as playlists of the presentations at the Messages 4 Men conferences in London (2017-19) and the (UK) National Conference on Men's Issues, “Domestic Abuse is a Men’s Issue, Too” (2020):

On a freezing cold day, a number of us engaged people at Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park - mostly Muslims, some Jews, a few neither. We generally find Muslims more willing to engage with our arguments than Jews. The video starts with a discussion with two Christian women, both proponents of MGM. I was as aggravated by them - particularly the second woman - as a woman campaigning against FGM would be by men turning up to defend FGM.
The placards a number of us were carrying advertised the Muslim case against circumcision on one side - https://tinyurl.com/QP2017 - and the Jewish case against it on the other, a leaflet produced by Jews Against Circumcision - https://tinyurl.com/JAC2017.
A tip of the hat to Mike P and men from The London Group - including Rod, Ewan, Richard, Lynton, Haydn and George - for speaking publicly on a number of issues and/or assisting with the anti-MGM campaigning.

On the evening of 26 August 2007 I was on holiday in Provence, one of the hottest areas of France. George, a 57-year-old Englishman – the owner of two adjacent properties with swimming pools – said to me, ‘Mike, would you like to have sex with my wife?’ The lady in question was Vicky (47).
Some background may be in order. In 2008 my book ‘Two Men in a Car – a businessman, a chauffeur, and their holidays in France’ was published, and it’s still selling in modest numbers, seven years later. It relates the stories of two holidays in the summers of 2007 and 2008, when I had far more disposable income than I have today.
In the summer of 2007, I was working as a business consultant for the Conservative party. My second marriage had just came to an end, and I was in need of some rest and recuperation. I decided to take a month’s holiday in France and Paul Carrington, a friend, joined me. As a part-time chauffeur, he was happy to take on all the driving. He’s also a martial arts expert, a talented singer-songwriter, and always reminds me of Al Murray, ‘The Pub Landlord’ – he’s a large, loud, cheerful character, with strong opinions on everything under the sun. The two of us have almost nothing in common other than strong opinions (almost invariably opposing ones) along with ex-wives and children (five of each, between us).
We enjoyed the 2007 holiday so much that we returned to France for a second month-long holiday in the summer of 2008.
I’m considering recording an audio book of ‘Two Men in a Car’, making it available at a modest cost, and have recorded a short segment from the book, of a little under five minutes’ duration. Let me know what you think. If feedback is sufficiently encouraging, I’ll audio record the whole book.
The book is available to buy for all major e-readers. The companies which make e-readers invariably supply free software so you can read e-books on PCs, tablets etc. I’m only familiar with Amazon Kindle software, but it's very good.
Four photographs from the holiday are available to view on the associated blog piece:
