As anyone who has played in a tabletop game knows, the published rules can be more "guidelines" than anything. They are a stepping off point and above all players and the DM should make the game and the world their own. Many tables create custom rules known as "homebrew." These can be minor tweaks to large re-writes. Changing a published rule should be done carefully and always for a good reason as these can quickly break your game.
