Asking Pathfinder vs. 5E ?⚙️ grinds my gears
Hello Subscribers,
It's super, super unusual for me to do a double upload...however I suspect the audiences for today's two videos won't cross over too much (probably).
I want to give a special shout out to Ivanmike1968, who does try to weigh multiple things and consider points of view that he's not all that fond of, in a way that isn't so...prickly.
I could be wrong in my reaction here, It's clear that Dave at least was trying to have a genial tone, and he really Is a nice guy. It's the choice of language, and the choice of points--that Pathfinder is all the things 5E isn't...that I feel may need some calling out.
After all, the two games are FAR more alike than they are different. I am happy to play either, and I plan to offer more Player Strategy and advice for 5E on my channel. My tastes as a GM and the way I run things just don't mesh well with 5E, and at the same time I see a lot of advantages to 'that other game.'

I don't spend any time in this video talking about the various excuses people will use to stand upon why they won't try a new game. I don't spend much time speaking to what non-D&D RPGs have to offer: I think it's self-evident, and I don't think the audience needs to hear that. There's lots of other videos on my channel about the world of Exciting non-D&D Tabletop Role-Playing Games.
What this video is about? the Social Engineering, the perils and pitfalls along the way to (hopefully) see it through to 'mission accomplished' when everyone's horizons are broader and the group is now accepting that D&D isn't the only RPG they want to play.
Shoutout to @CritCrab, which is the channel we're poking fun at. RPGHorrorStories is a fun subreddit to read sometimes, the curation and character added by his narration *does* elevate the content.

THE OSR is starting to be pretty old! there are some fixed ideas about what an OSR TTRPG is. Does it have to be D&D based? Does it have to be minimalist? Does it have to be Fantasy?
I'm here to shake up your foundations...by recommending these 3 OSR TTRPGs for 2021 which AREN'T neccessarily ANY OF THE ABOVE!!!
We'll be Flipping through Against the DarkMaster, a MERP AND Rolemaster inspired game.
We'll be looking at Aces & Eights, which follows in the footsteps of Boot Hill, but uses some unique mechanics for shooting and rests on the bedrock of Hackmaster 4th Edition's character creation system. It's an AD&D-derived OSR....but it isn't fantasy!
We'll also take a look at Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea, a Rollicking remix of AD&D 1st edition, freshening it up but holding true to the bedrock of that ancient game.

Sure, when it comes to the rules, we know clerics combine utility magic, healing, and second-line melee prowess. But who is the Cleric in the World? Is she a priest? is she a gnostic? a nun? a bizarre witch in the woods getting revelation from an old goddess of the winds? an initiate of a secretive mystery cult?
What do her adventuring companions think about the magic that she uses on them? does this violate their own creed? The answer, in so many cases across my career in D&D, has been: *we have no idea at all*.
At the heart of this is a strong symmetry-breaking between High Fantasy worlds and our own touchstones about faith IRL: In fantasy settings, the vast majority of the time, the Gods *verifiably* exist. The mystery of faith is 'case closed.'
What are the consequences of that? Could that be one answer to why we have so little understanding of who our cleric is and who they are in the eyes of their companions?

In Dungeons And Dragons Roleplaying game (and other High Fantasy, Exploration-Based, Challenge-focused, Combat-Centric Tabletop RPGs)...Sometimes there are vertical elements "Levels" in dungeons. Stairs have been the traditional first-resort choice for transitioning between these levels, but new thinking is upsetting the balance and moving to the front a different kind of vertical transition between floors: ELEVATORS and RAMPS.
This new push for elevators and ramps is being done in the name of 'inclusive dungeon design,' to give characters with mobility impairments and chair users the opportunity to explore the dungeon without depending on abled companions. and some people are very proud that they're going that route. Others complain about how this might be 'anachronistic' or 'unrealistic.'' Well, I've got news for ya: Elevators have been around a long, long time in D&D. They're just fine. but they have a few quirks, which are worth exploring in depth!

I make no secret of my preference for live play. Indeed, I think that live play is the only medium in which the hobby will grow rather than contract. Live play is where the hobby adapts to new people and innovates new forms. I've known about Pendragon since 2006 or so when I first started poking at Hârn, but didn't quite grasp what it was after and how it plays. This overview is specifically about the 5th edition of the game, which re-centers the game around English Knights and makes magic and 'the enchantment of Britain' as Avalon slips into a dreamtime something for the characters to witness as their game unfolds. It is much, much, much more focused than 4th edition and the game seems to know why you've chosen to play it over something else.
