Cardboard and paper products we go beyond sheet mulching Several years ago I began using cardboard and various paper products sheet mulching some of our garden beds and paths. She mulching is widely used and accepted by gardeners and Permaculturists and is a technique that is used to suppress weeds, grass and other undesirable plants while also providing a rich carbon source to help build soil. In this video I described the techniques and materials that I have been incorporating into my soil creation methods. Years ago I began using cardboard and shredded paper in my compost piles along with leaves and wood chips as the carbon source. I did not shredded the cardboard which is typically done when composting cardboard therefore it took me much longer than my traditional 20 to 30 day composting turnaround time. I've also used cardboard and many other paper products along with many wood products in my hugelkultur pits and beds. I also described how I no longer remove any tightly adhered petroleum-based tape products from the cardboard or paper products. I started off with small areas that I experimented with and discovered that if I used some of the mycelium at the base of the O horizon (organic layer of material in the forest and woodlot) to inoculate the cardboard and paper products that all of the materials including the tapes and pigments from the glossy medical and veterinary journals would no longer be detectable within two years. Given the amount of concern that people in forums and blogs have regarding the use of cardboard, paper products, inks, tapes and adhesive materials I have routinely done literature researches looking for any significant concerns. In this video we start off in the second food forest and I take a pitchfork and dig down into an area with multiple layers of cardboard that is between 1 1/2 and two years old. Surprisingly no cardboard or paper products were detected however there were several small strands of plastic tape that were not well covered by leaves or plant materials that I used to cover-up the cardboard as time went on. The soil in the area which I was digging was predominantly gravel prior to depositing the cardboard, rabbit manure and bedding, fruit waste from edible arrangements, fall leaves from a nearby town and a thin layer of wood chips on the surface. The plants that grew over the surface were only mode once last fall. When digging up the material there's a significant amount of root mass, gravel, and the A horizon which is a mixture of organic material and gravel and sand. Adjacent to the gradual slope, that was dug up, is the mound created from the excavated swale. The mound was composed of topsoil excavated from the area whereupon one was created.
