This Is Why The Presidential Candidates DON'T MATTER
From now until November, 2016 you will hear hundreds of reports on the presidential race. There's a reason that NONE of them matter, and yet, no one seems to be talking about. This is what our mainstream media is missing.

Thanks to the latest foolhardy attempt to repeal Obamacare, the healthcare of 9 million kids is in limbo. That's because lawmakers were too wrapped up in the latest repeal effort to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program to families ineligible for Medicaid and too poor for private insurance. However, both sides already agreed before the Graham-Cassidy debacle that CHIP would have less money than before. Natalie McGill joins Lee at the desk to lament that lawmakers have to reach an agreement every few years that poor kids need health care when it should be a right.

DESCRIPTION - The War on Drugs is about mass incarceration. It's about destroying the activist community. It's about destroying the black community. But it was never about the drugs themselves--unless you mean the drugs that were consistently pumped into this country under CIA cover. Yet Attorney General Jeff Sessions is insistent on starting a new drug war, in spite of the fact it has had a profoundly negative impact on our society, from justifying the need for military weapons for local police, to filling our prisons with low-level offenders serving ridiculous sentences for the mere possession of drugs. And while the drug war continues to have repercussions for our American justice system, it gets little play in our mainstream media. Lee Camp reveals why the recent admissions from officials in the Reagan and Nixon administrations about the real reasons behind the drug war should sounding off way more alarm bells than it has.

Last week, the President imposed tariffs of up to 30% on imported solar cells and modules and 50% on imported washing machines. In addition to slowing the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, this doesn’t help his constituents economically. The tariff likely eliminates more jobs than it creates, it’ll definitely result in Americans paying more, and it’s probable that US trade partners will inflict retaliatory tariffs or quotas on US imports.
The rationale for this development is that it’ll shield US manufacturers that are being hurt by foreign competition. Yet the law on which the move is grounded -section 203(a)(3) of the Trade Act (19 U.S.C. 2252(a)(3))- doesn't require domestic manufacturers to show foreign companies to be implementing unfair business practices, and consumers shouldn't be taxed to help a handful of producers struggling at the hand of fair competition just because they happen to have influence over the US International Trade Commission and the Trump Administration.

Mike Papantonio, host of America’s Lawyer, joins Lee Camp to discuss the opioid crisis in America and how it’s largely manufactured by pharma corporations for profit. They also speak about Papantonio’s new book and his first novel, “Law and Vengeance.” The book tells the story of Nicholas Deketomis, born and raised in a poor neighborhood, who makes it out by winning lawsuits and thus billions in settlement money. Nicholas’s latest case has him involved with a powerful pharmaceutical company, and before he knows it he’s been framed for murder. The book is a great display of character development while also thoroughly researched and informative, which is unsurprising given Papantonio’s long record of exposing corruption in corporate legal cases as a trial lawyer.
Trump’s indefensible refusal to clearly denounce white nationalism after the attack in Charlottesville gave corporations, politicians, and media the opportunity for some breathtaking grandstanding. Many jumped to declare their disappointment in the President for refusing to stand against hatred. Even the Pentagon used this opportunity for some serious PR. They announced their clear opposition to racism and bigotry, while conveniently omitting the obvious fact that war IS hate. On ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Martha Raddatz called the US military the most diverse of our institutions. This may seem like a good quality of the military, but in fact it’s symptomatic of the lack of economic opportunity in our country. It’s a symptom of the fact that people of color are disproportionately poor, and thus disproportionately desperate enough to do what’s necessary to support their families. Additionally, the “volunteer only” policy of the US military is actually a policy of coerced enrollment, both overtly by disproportionately preying on lower income schools, and inadvertently through economic incentives; this is not something of which we should be proud. Joining the military and perpetuating endless interventionist wars and the mass murder of civilians should not be the only way for citizens to gain access to healthcare or a living wage.

Lee goes over policy advances won by the left since the Occupy movement shook the world. Popular activism has moved the dial on universal healthcare, raising the minimum wage, environmental action, and more. Deeper into the news we look at the failed coup in Venezuela last weekend and an environmental stance taken by the European Investment Bank which has decided to stop financing fossil fuel projects.
Naomi Karavani looks back at the role the School of the Americas has played in overthrowing democratic regimes in Latin America. Graduates of the school were central to the recent Bolivian coup but their history is long and dark. Natalie McGill ends the show with a report on a database where the NYPD illegally kept hundreds of people's fingerprints.

Lee Camp delves into the insane GOP tax reform plan, which is really yet another giveaway to the rich. Then, Lee talks about how people in Atlanta are actually getting arrested for having compassion and discusses the anti-war activists arrested for protesting a secret American spy base in Australia. Lee rounds out the 1st half of the show by introducing a new segment: “Suppression Celebration.” In the 2nd half of the show, Natalie McGill joins Lee at the desk to discuss the emerging science of gene editing and how why we should doubt the motivations of its largest funder. Then, Naomi Karavani presents a segment on the CIA’s covert funding artists during the Cold War. This and more on Redacted Tonight.
