The Republican-controlled Senate appears poised to confirm a Supreme Court justice who believes in presidential immunity to criminal investigation. He was hand-picked by a president whose wealth was inherited through tax fraud, whose former personal attorney has implicated him in a federal crime, and who is the focus of an ongoing investigation into a foreign attack on American democracy.
For the past two weeks, the debate over Kavanaugh has focused on the psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford’s emotional testimony before the Senate that Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape her as a teenager, and Kavanaugh’s furious denial. But once Kavanaugh revealed himself as an unrestrained partisan actor, Republicans rallied to his support. Americans do not know for certain that Ford’s allegations are true, but they do know for certain that no one with the authority to do so ever made a real effort to find out.
Whatever remained of the separation of powers within uniform Republican control of government melted away in the fracas over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Senate Republicans abdicated their duty to oversee nominations by refusing to call the only witness to Ford’s allegations, Kavanaugh’s classmate Mark Judge, to testify publicly. The White House severely curtailed the FBI inquiry, making it unlikely to turn up evidence that Kavanaugh had lied under oath about his drinking or high school behavior, despite one public report after another that showed his testimony to be false. The successful Trump administration effort to limit the investigation into Kavanaugh showed that the stated commitments of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and FBI Director Chris Wray to resist political pressure in their enforcement of the law will crumble under sustained pressure. With his ascension to the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh will be able to make good on the threat of partisan vengeance he made in his testimony.

I’m really not sure quite how to capture what just happened. But a major, major player in the conservative/Federalist Society legal establishment in DC just posted a lengthy Twitter thread in which he accuses another alum of Kavanaugh’s high school of assaulting Professor Blasey Ford. (After making the argument he falls back and says he doesn’t know whether the other guy is guilty. But the entire thread is intended to say that he is the culprit and that Kavanaugh is the victim of a wrongful identification.)
I’m not even sure how to convey the argument. It involves a series of logical (I mean this in the technical sense, not saying they make sense) surmises, the geography of where different students lived and the floor plan of a particular house in the town in question. The argument is highly, highly speculative to put it mildly and I would say quite likely libelous. You can read the thread here.
The point I want to make clear is that the author, Ed Whelan, is not some random on Twitter. He’s a big deal in conservative legal circles. This development is shocking on many, many levels.

President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday, complaining in an interview with The Hill that “I don’t have an Attorney General. It’s very sad.”
Trump was once again critical of Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the ongoing investigations related to the 2016 presidential election, a decision that has removed him from any role in the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia — an inquiry now headed by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Trump said Sessions had succumbed to pressure applied by Democrats during his confirmation process, leading to what the president said was the attorney general’s unnecessary recusal.
“He gets in and probably because of the experience that he had going through the nominating when somebody asked him the first question about Hillary Clinton or something he said ‘I recuse myself, I recuse myself,’” Trump said.
Asked whether he will fire Sessions, as some have speculated, the president demurred.

Lisa Page, the FBI former lawyer who came under fire for an illicit extramarital affair with the now-ex-FBI agent Peter Strzok, as well as damning anti-Trump text messages leading up to the 2016 election, gave a deposition in mid-July as part of a joint congressional investigation into how the Justice Department handled the Russia and Clinton email probes.
According to Fox News, a transcript of the deposition confirmed what many already assumed about the Mueller investigation into Russian collusion.
“I think this represents that even as far as May 2017, we still couldn’t answer the question,” Page said regarding whether or not there was Russian collusion.
May 2017 is when Mueller was officially appointed special counsel to investigate alleged Russian collussion.

A joint Egyptian and French mission discovered several storage silos containing large quantities of animal and plant remains, as well as pottery and stone tools, the antiquities ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The ministry said the find indicates that humans inhabited the fertile Tell al-Samara, in the northern province of El-Dakahlia, as early as the fifth millennium BC, far predating Egypt’s oldest known pyramid.
“Analysing the biological material that has been discovered will present us with a clearer view of the first communities that settled in the Delta and the origins of agriculture and farming in Egypt,” said Nadia Khedr, a ministry official responsible for Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities on the Mediterranean.
