Secretly, car writers love to review minivans. Why, you may ask? Well, for starters, though minivans have gotten a bad rap as soccer caddies and mall parking lot residents, they’re usually quite pleasant to drive. In much the same way I find it refreshing to tool around in a Mercedes Sprinter or a Ford Transit Connect, getting behind the wheel of the newest family hauler is always a nice change of pace.
What’s more, minivans have all the best stuff: Vacuums, multiple video screens, apps and games baked into the infotainment systems, and some of the most innovative, configurable interiors you’ll find anywhere. For a reviewer, there’s a lot to chew on.
And that’s one reason I was so excited to tackle Chrysler’s new Pacifica for this week’s Why Buy? video. Along with the Honda Odyssey, this is the newest minivan on the market, and packed to the roof with interesting features that are dedicated to making people hauling a thing of pleasure, not pain. While there are plenty of Mercedes-Benz-based motorhomes on the market in the United States, they all come from upfitters customizing the vans, at least until now. The Metris Weekender is the brand's first factory-offered pop-up camper for the American market. It debuts at the Chicago Auto Show.

In its metamorphosis from a humble Cayenne Coupe, the fastback-only Turbo GT sports the most powerful V8 engine Porsche has ever built, making it the automaker’s fastest, quickest-accelerating SUV. In fact, the flagship Cayenne recently broke the Nurburgring lap record for performance SUVs, circling the track in a lightning-fast, officially notarized 7 minutes and 38.9 seconds. Need some context? That’s a quicker lap than the 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 – all in a 5,000-pound SUV with comfortable seating for four, up to 51.7 cubic feet of cargo room, and a relatively smooth highway ride.

There was a time when station wagons were thick on the ground across this country. Times have changed, though, and now crossovers are the most popular form of family transportation.
Some automakers, though, continue to make wagons, and we salute them. This week Audi unveiled the RS6 Avant, a nearly 600-horsepower, all-wheel-drive super wagon that will, for the first time ever, be sold in the U.S. We’re going to talk about it on today’s episode, along with why station wagons have fallen out of favor, and which ones are our favorite of all time.

John Neff is joined on this podcast by Jeff Perez who just got back from driving the new 2020 Toyota Supra hard on track.
"The cash return on nostalgia can't be overestimated. Movies and television helped facilitate the concept of recycled ideas (and we see how well that's worked out), but a similar trend grips the modern auto industry. Automakers have attempted to capitalize on nostalgic sentimentality for years, and the 2020 Toyota Supra is the latest attempt."
