Wayfarer Plays Wurm Unlimited 001 - Introducing the Server
The Wayfarer Project hosts a Wurm Unlimited server that is a slightly customized Creative Map world. This series documents the adventures of Wayfarer in this world of Wurm and those who choose to join him. The series is equally fine for both beginning Wurm players who wish to learn as well as experienced Wurm players who enjoy watching Wurm videos.
Lawrence W. Moore, the author of The Wayfarer Project and artist going under the name “Wayfarer,” has recently moved with his wife, Liza Seigido of the Psyche Electro-Acoustic Opera Company from Miami, FL to rural North Florida. These two composers, multimedia artists, and professors are now adding homesteading to their repertoire. Discovering a new-found freedom in North Florida on their 5 acre plot of land has been truly inspiring. The two are engaging in the growing of their own food while Liza has begun making her own vinegar, wine, ferments, and perfumes. Moore works his vegetable garden daily and the two tend to their small fruit orchard as well. The homesteading lifestyle has been rewarding and a refreshing change for Moore and Seigido.
With this new lifestyle of homesteading, at the affectionately named Digging Cat Homestead, Moore has decided to breathe some new life into The Wayfarer Project. As more continues as a composer and multimedia artist, his music and music videos will still be a mainstay of his creative activities. Moore still teaches in higher education and will continue to make tutorial videos about various audio technology and music -making subjects. Of course, he still enjoys creative gaming and will continue to do that as well. What will be knew will be content about the work that he puts in at Digging Cat Homestead in living the rural life growing food and getting closer in touch with nature.

Here is a little taste of what is to come in Sound for Relaxation, Meditation, and Sleep. I am combining the cricket sounds that I made that I synthesized in VCV Rack with binaural beats and a simplified approach to ocean wave sounds. There is also synth ASMR for meridian stimulation. The ocean sounds a bit more distant as the perspective is in a grove of crickets near the beach.

In this episode we get into the heart of crafting sound in synthesis, filtering. There are a wide variety of filters in synthesis, but in the beginning it is good to start off witht he high pass filter and the low pass filters, which the VCF module in VCV Rack can perform. We take a look at controlling the cut off frequency, adjusting the resonance, and using drive in order to achieve a wide variety of timbres for our sound. We look at controlling these parameters with MIDI as well as an LFO. As usual, we also look at some more approaches to making our signal flow leaner using a patch contributed by a viewer named Frank who has been contributing his knowledge to the series. This results in creative uses for the OCT and MUTES modules. Additionally, we see how to color code our cables for signal types.

Let's design the sound of a nighttime scene that has crickets and a crackling campfire. The campfire is small and peaceful and the crickets are hypnotic, which is just how we want them for relaxation, meditation, or sleep. In this episode, we will see how to make the campfire sound step by step in VCV Rack, which includes the flames and the crackles. We then bring in the cricket sounds from episode 010 of this series and integrate the two together to make this pleasant sound experience. The crickets are good for brain hemisphere synchronization and the crackling of the fire makes for some good ASMR.

In this episode, Wayfarer spawns in a hover vessel and talks a little more strategy about hover vessels and small vessels to star with. He then proceeds to explore the world for healing components to make medical supplies. There are a lot of status effects in the game regarding health that come about from a variety of hazards. In the hover vessel, which has a fridge, Wayfarer is able to go around and collect a lot of the healing supplies that are needed in the game. He also finds out why one needs to be well acquainted with their effects. Some of the healing components explored are confetti moss scrapings, herbal leaves, buds, natural stimulant, natural sweetener, mushrooms, and plant fiber.

In this episode, we will go deeper into the fundamentals of synthesis, the vocabulary of analog synthesis, and working with common synthesizer modules. Knowing the vocabulary and what different modules do is key to understanding any kind of modular analog system or any software plugin instrument. We look at the function of a VCO as opposed to an LFO. We look at their common uses and what other modules they commonly interact with. We also look at the VCA and EG as well as their multiple uses. Since VCV Rack is a Eurorack modeling environment, you can plug in unlimited combinations and it is important to know the multiple uses for oscillators, envelope generators, and how they interact with each other in common uses.

We are about to go on an adventure in which we will learn about the art of synthesis using the open source programming environment, Pure Data. PD is a free download and is a very wide-open creative environment for artists to create all things audio and MIDI. It is a great way to learn synthesis as it allows you to build synthesizer components from the ground up to truly know what they are and how they function. This series is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of synthesis so that one will be able to apply this knowledge to any software or even analog hardware synthesizer in the future. In this series, the learning of Pure Data and synthesis is made easy.
This episode goes over some of the basics of PD so that one can become more comfortable with the software. Additionally, digital audio fundamentals are covered, specifically sampling rate. This episode shows how sampling sound is a process of converting electrical signal into digital information that can then be managed and visualized in a waveform display. Digital audio is composed of numbers that store the information of the waveform of the sound that was sampled.

In this episode, Wayfarer shows many of the crafting stations that you will be making in Rising World and then goes hunting to find hides to make leather. The leather making is for making a saddle so that he can find a horse and ride it. Getting around the world is much quicker on a horse!
