Balance of the front and back hip joint muscles is necessary for a balanced pelvis -- and a balanced pelvis is necessary to take strain off the sacro-iliac joints.
When the pelvis is off-balance, it's either too far forward, twisted with one side forward, or one side high; less often, it is too far backward. All of these positions pull upon the lower spine and so affect the attached sacrum, adding strain to the sacroiliac joints.
