Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the Taliban isn't allowing flights with Americans on board to leave Afghanistan. Blinken went on to say the U.S. will push the Taliban to allow them to depart: "the bottom line is this, those flights need to be able to depart. And we will work everyday to make sure they can do that." This comes as the former Afghan president issued a public apology for leaving the country. As for the current leaders, four of the Taliban appointees were formerly detained in Guantanamo bay. President Obama released them in 2014, in exchange for former U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. The House sets its debate on the $2.5T domestic investment plan. But moderate Senator Joe Manchin only supports a fraction of that, which could hamper president Biden's Build Back Better agenda. Manchin said he would only support $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion of Biden's $3.5 trillion spending package. But Biden's hopeful they can work something out.This comes as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejects Manchin's call to hit pause on reconciliation. And Biden is set to announce a six-pronged approach to combating COVID-19. That includes new announcements on mandates and testing. White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters the plan will span the “public and private sectors to help continue to get the pandemic under control.” She did not elaborate on the details. A swarm of deadly tornadoes in Kentucky left homes and businesses destroyed and dozens dead. Kentucky's Gov. Andy Beshear called the collection of tornadoes the most destructive in the state's history. The powerful twisters destroyed a candle factory as well as the fire and police stations in a small town in Kentucky, ripped through a nursing home in neighboring Missouri, and killed at least six workers at an Amazon warehouse in Illinois. New York Gov. #KathyHochul's new indoor mask mandate takes effect Monday morning. Now New Yorkers will be required to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces unless businesses have a vaccine requirement. Anyone who violates the mask mandate could face fines of up to $1,000. This comes as Philadelphia announces vaccine passports for indoor dining. The city’s health commissioner announced Monday it's set to take effect starting Jan. 3. What's not included are grocery stores and convenience stores. At least four states in recent weeks have called in members of the National Guard to deal with health care staffing issues. Those states are Indiana, New Hampshire, Maine, and New York. The Indiana Department of Health confirmed to local media that Guard members were sent to 13 facilities after officials with Indiana University Health, the state’s largest hospital system, made the request. In New Hampshire, authorities confirmed several days ago that about 70 Guard members would be deployed within the coming weeks to provide non-clinical support at medical care facilities. As for Maine, Democrat Gov. Janet Mills said on Dec. 8 that she activated about 75 additional National Guard members. And in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, announced that the state’s National Guard would conduct a similar mission at state hospitals. Ken Buck is leading the seven House GOP members in the “Pledge for America.” Rolled out earlier this week, the goal is to stay away from campaign donations from the likes of Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple, and Twitter. This comes as a nonprofit project found big tech broke its own records in political spending during the 2020 election cycle. And the CDC's guideline for children as young as two years old to wear masks is raising issue with some lawmakers. The bicameral group of legislators wrote to the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, “The implementation of these recommendations has had serious consequences for some Americans. Multiple parents of young children have been removed from flights, and in some instances, permanently banned, from future travel on the airline they were flying due to their toddler’s refusal to wear a mask,” They note the CDC's guideline is the strictest in the world.
