Swamp Battle Sketch using Oil Pastels and Colored Pencils
I do these videos to show that you can use oil pastels and colored pencils together to produce interesting illustrations that look like paintings without using any paint!
I have seen many YouTube videos about how to use oil pastels to make pictures of (Sigh...) apples or oranges or flowers or simple portraits or junk in a corner, called 'still lifes' for some reason, or abstracts (BFD!) or landscapes, y'know, all the traditional artsy fartsy stuff.
What about using your imagination? What about Fantasy or Science Fiction illustrations?
Using these materials and techniques being demonstrated in these videos, one can make images which showcase your imagination without having to resort to expensive art supplies!
I'm not a great artist. I won't pretend to be. I do love doing it, though! The artists that inspired my efforts are Frazetta, Boris, Bell, Whelan, Brom, Eggleton, Bama, Freas, Achilleos and hosts of other talented illustrators whose paintings grace the covers of the best of imaginative contemporary literature!
I appreciate these artists and I've done my best to emulate their styles.
Years ago, when I was homeless, I didn't have the resources available to me to do illustrations in the media that they used. Oils, acrylics, watercolors require you purchasing tubes or jars of paints and mediums, brushes of differing types, different supports for painting on, cleaning supplies to care for the materials, all of which require a studio or stable environment for being able to produce your art and being homeless made things exceedingly difficult.
So I sort of extrapolated which type of materials could be used to achieve close to the same results and I came up with this technique. I was also able to draw at the local library because it was quiet, it was well lit, there were tables and chairs and I could draw for hours without disturbing anyone! The media was portable, not messy and easy to put away quickly! So, I was able to produce some pretty decent pictures which I was able to sell for money that would not only supply me with food and clothing but also let me purchase more art supplies!
I think I did rather well with what I had.
