Guests: Peter Schiff, President Euro Pacific Capital and David Malpass Chief Economist at Bear Stearns Peter Schiff: "The dollar is not just falling against the Yen and the Euro, the dollar is dropping against every currency on the planet. We're at a 28-year low against the Canadian dollar. The reason why the dollar has been falling since 1972, is that the U.S. economy is not saving and producing enough and we are running enormous trade deficits. We are exporting dollars into the world economy and the world has nothing to do with the dollars except sell them. This will create tremendous pressure on the dollar." David Malpass: "The dollar is mostly responsive to what the Central Bank does. In the 1990's Greenspan was worried about irrational exuberance and set out to make the dollar more scarce. The dollar then strengthened a lot in those years. '97, '98, '99. Real interest rates were high." Peter Schiff: "Right now, there is too much liquidity. The problem for the Fed is that even if they wanted to defend the dollar by raising interest rates, the U.S. economy is so vulnerable right now with all the adjustable rate mortgages out there and the enormous national debt financed with Treasury bills that we can't even afford to stabilize the dollar."
