When I'm not teaching, cleaning data, running analysis, writing method sections or editing the next Standard Deviant video, I have a few vices I reach for - one of which is gaming on my custom PC. Although I play a variety of games, one of my recent favorites is the massive online battle royal game, PUBG.
I'm no good but I play for fun and it provides my mind with a necessary escape. Today, I struck a bit of luck and nailed the best headshot of my PUBG career - full sprint, perfect lead, perfect bullet drop.
This video is for anyone who doesn't know what machine learning is, wants a simple explanation of what it is & how to get started.
Machine Learning is a broad topic that includes a slew of techniques, old and new. In this presentation, I break down the bits and pieces all Machine Learning techniques have in common and relate them to common techniques like Simple Linear Regression, Multiple Regression, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine and Decision Trees.
I talk about the what makes Neural Networks different than other techniques and walk through one example of how they are used in identifying hand written digits.
Let me know what you think in the comments below - I'm always looking for topics you'd like to see & explained!

Probability and statistics are hard enough on their own. With the help of animations like this, I'm hoping to tackle more complicated topics in future videos.
Here's a quick preview of how animations can help paint that mental picture of what's happening when you subtract the mean and divide by standard deviation.
Let me know what you think about using animations like this for statistics!

I love answering questions from my students and people online but I've noticed that the same questions tend to come up, like What is Data Science? What is Hypothesis Testing? WHAT. IS. A. P-Value.
I'll be making videos on each of these topics separately, but here are quick explanations of some of the most frequently asked questions from students.
Let me know what you think in the comments below, letting me know what kind of topics you'd explanations about!
