Ben Burgis talks about Charlie Kirk’s brand of Republican, which we can unfortunately call a “Tucker Carlson Republican” at the moment, as Carlson has taken the helm of saying the quiet parts out loud for some time now, allowing others with lesser platforms to do the same. This unfortunately leads us all into the bowels of hell, where all of these people are willing to contradict themselves if doing so means that they will be advocating for helping LESS people. So: no asylum for immigrants, even if the U.S. has to break international (and U.S.) law; no rise in minimum wage, even if, presumably, a large portion of Kirk and Tucker et al.’s audience would benefit. And so on. Ben is largely concerned with Tucker and Kirk’s claims on populism. They say they’re populists (as does Donald Trump), but nothing that they actually advocate for benefits the bulk of their audience.
