In Kansas City, Shamblin was invited to be part of a Wednesday morning men's prayer breakfast which met each week at Poutches Bar. One of the busdiness men of that group named Doug had been studying the book of John, and had written out on a piece of paper the first two lines of this song. One day Doug handed Shamblin that paper, and said, "Can you write a song about this?" Shamblin went home and wrote this song that evening. The song was recorded by Steven Palmer and his crew in the Word of Life church in Wichita, Kansas. Migel Morro was playing the bongo for this song off camera.
