Title: The Caves of Perigord_ A Novel
Author: Martin Walker
File Type: Mobi
Subject:Fiction
Description:From Publishers WeeklyThe discovery of a fragment of a prehistoric cave painting stirs up old passions in modern Europe in this busy, fact-driven fourth novel by commentator and journalist Walker (America Reborn). When Maj. Philip Manners approaches auction house expert Lydia Dean about an object inherited from his father, he expects merely to turn a quick profit. But Lydia is alarmed: the fragment appears to be from an uncharted French cave and was probably obtained illegally. It is stolen from the auction house, prompting an intense reaction from French President Fran‡ois Malrand. Having set up the theft as an elaborate McGuffin, Walker then shifts to the V‚zere Valley, approximately 15,000 B.C., and the story of how young cave-dwellers Little Moon and Keeper of the Deer fall tragically in love and defy authorities by painting with unprecedented realism. The story leaps ahead to 1944 France, to describe how Malrand, aided by Mannerss father, Jack, and an uncouth American named McPhee trained the French Resistance to fight the Germans and in the process stumbled upon the cave. The shifts from story to story make for a neat gimmick but an awkward package: despite the link of the fragment, the three stories often get in each others way. Though much of the detail is fascinating, Walker devotes more energy to describing WWII technology and warfare than to developing the characters. In the end, its the cave painting that is most vivid here. Agent, Ron Goldfarb of Goldfarb & Grayhill. (Mar. 12)Forecast: With several books (both fiction and non) and frequent appearances on CNN and NPR under his belt, Walkers name alone ensures respectable sales. The cover a cave drawing emblazoned with a red swastika will catch browsers eyes. 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalAdultHigh School-Three intertwined stories, stretching from prehistory to the present, center on a rock painting of a menacing bull and draw readers into a mystery buried near the 17,000-year-old caves of Lascaux in southwestern France. Manners, who inherited the fragment from his father, a British army officer helping the French resistance, brings it to Lydia Dean, an expert in prehistoric art in a London auction house. She has it photographed, and circulates the pictures to select colleagues; but before its provenance can be established, the object is stolen. Trying to find out who took it, from what cave it originated, and how Mannerss father got it, Dean and Manners journey to the remote caves of the P rigord, and their mutual attraction blossoms. The stories of the creation of the painting; of unlikely allies trying to slow a German panzer division in its effort to reach Normandy; and of present-day interests seeking to acquire and display the stone, deemed a national treasure by the president of France, all make for compelling reading. Its unfortunate that theres no map of the region; nevertheless, following these stories challenges, captivates, and educates teens about the art world, the French resistance effort, and prehistoric cave painting.br Molly Connally, Kings Park Library, Fairfax County, VA br 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Description:Amazon.com Reviewstrongstrong br See that moon up there? br You can reach that high. br Never be afraid because you can be anything you want to be. Susan Lucci was only five years old when her father shared these encouraging words with her. They inspired the highly imaginative child who loved make-believe to craft one of the most enduring characters in television history, an achievement that would earn her a record twenty-one Emmy nominations—the most for an actor in the awards history—and the crown as Leading Lady of Daytime. When Lucci and All My Children were introduced to the world in 1971, American television changed forever. Susans character, the beautiful, spirited, and mercurial Erica Kane, was an original—the first vixen viewers loved to hate. But while millions have enjoyed getting to know Ericas many sides—and have been awed at how this character has continually remade herself—the woman who plays her has remained a mystery. In her long-awaited memoir, this very private actress, wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, friend, and entrepreneur pulls back the curtain to reveal her story.Susan, like Erica Kane, has undergone a metamorphosis many times. All My Life shares the stories of those transformations: starring in roles on television and stage, where she took Broadway not just by storm but by tsunami as one critic raved about her performance in Annie Get Your Gun; mounting successful cabaret acts (solo and with Regis Philbin); bringing art and joy back to New York in the wake of 911; conquering the tango with Tony Dovolani on ABCs hit show Dancing with the Stars; and building a successful career as an entrepreneur with a signature line of products.Susan goes beyond her success to talk about the darker moments, too, including the childhood guilt she harbored over the death of her dear grandmother, the car accident that nearly took away her career and her eyesight, her newborn sons life-threatening illness, coping with her husbands cancer, and the pain of miscarriage—one of the many parallels between her Erica Kane.As charming, down-to-earth, and compelling as the woman whose story it tells, All My Life shines a spotlight on one of our most popular stars and reminds us of the power of dreams and how we can find the courage and tenacity to make them come true.strongA Look Inside All My Lifestrong br Click on the images below to open larger versions. All My Children in Los Angeles.hr When Susan Lucci and All My Children were introduced to the world in 1971, American television changed forever.
