Beginning to Self-regulate Your Postural System, Part II: Organizing the Basis for a System
Because our feeling sense gets used to our familiar bad posture, we need something other than our immediate sensory input to guide us towards better posture. What we need is a rational system. In this video, we begin to lay the groundwork for organizing a rational system by naming specific points on the body which we can then work with to understand what our goals are and how we will achieve them.
Initial Alexander Technique lessons are conducted one-on-one with a teacher over Zoom. They are designed to cultivate your ability to apply your rational mind to how you move. For more information about lessons you can visit my website or go straight to the creator of iAT, Jeando Masoero.

"Creativity, as the capacity to solve new and evolving problems, is a product of the use of reasoning with concepts, reasoning at the highest level. It is very important to insist on that point: reasoning to direct and control one’s activity is not an innate talent: it rests on the learned capacity to plan and organize psycho-physical behavior with speech as a functional tool."
How are you supposed to sit on a chair? Most of us have never learned a thing about how sit. We’ve done it since we were children based entirely on what feels comfortable. Yet most people can’t sit comfortably on a flat chair, supporting themselves, for even a few minutes.
To change how you sit, you have to have a conception of how to best sit. If you don’t even know what would be a good way to sit, nothing you do will improve your sitting. This video will hit some of the basics of sitting, so you can begin to implement a rational plan to improve how you sit.
I offer lessons in the Initial Alexander Technique, which are conducted one-on-one with a teacher over Zoom. They are designed to help you gain conscious control over how you move your body. Most people have no idea what they’re doing with their body, and as they misuse their body, they end up with discomfort, pain, and other issues that they may not even realize are caused by what they’re doing to themselves. But how do you figure out what you’re doing wrong? And how do you change what you're doing and overcome lifelong habits?
In an Initial Alexander Technique lesson, you will record yourself through Zoom, so you will be able to see and understand what you are doing when you stand, sit, walk, and perform other simple gestures. With the assistance of your teacher, you will come to understand how you are misusing the mechanisms of your body, and you will gain the ability to choose to use yourself in a more sensible way. You can learn how to use your body without pain. You can break free from long held habits. All you need is a system that works.

"No, what we need to do is not to educate our school furniture, but to educate our children. Give a child the ability to adapt himself within reasonable limits to his environment, and he will not suffer discomfort, nor develop bad physical habits, whatever chair or form you give him to sit upon."

Because our feeling sense can so easily deceive us, we need some objective way of knowing if our posture is improving or not. By getting objective visual feedback, we can say for certain if we are succeeding or failing in doing what we've intended to do. This video covers the different ways of getting objective feedback, as well as some of the pros and cons and other things to consider when using the different methods of getting objective visual feedback.

""Students of these questions know that the man whose conditions we are analysing has already developed debauched kinesthetic systems which permit defective registrations of different sensations or feeling tones, and hence it is very difficult for the person so constituted to arrive at a reliable estimate of the extent of his improvement through such faulty senses."
F.M. Alexander
After giving specific definitions for the possible directions of movement, we learn the basic setup for how to perform a rationally guided postural adjustment.

"Let me make myself clear by explaining that the man who breathes incorrectly and inadequately, does so as an immediate and inevitable consequence of abnormal and harmful conditions of certain parts of his body. The man who breathes correctly and adequately does so as an immediate and inevitable consequence of normal and salubrious conditions of the same parts. It therefore follows that if the conditions present in the second man can be induced in the first, he will then, but not otherwise, be a correct and adequate breather. And the process by which this is achieved is simply a readjustment of the parts of the body by a new and correct use of the muscular mechanisms through the directive agent of the sphere of consciousness."

To accurately make a postural adjustment, we have to have a clear conception of the movements required to produce that adjustment. By modeling the movements, we can change our understanding of set of directions, so that we can better implement them. In this video, we look at the directions to pull the lower sternum and lower ribs back and up.

"With the help of language and other social tools, such as speech, and speech-systems like geometry, conscious plans of actions, and pragmatic methods of inquiry, human beings can form conceptions that represent a situation beyond simple subjective feelings and immediate perception."

We use our legs all the time; to stand, walk, sit, and make many other gestures. But do we understand the different parts of the legs and how they function best? This video will begin our journey into understanding how to self-manipulate our legs for the better, which will also help us improve the condition of our torso and coordinate gestures properly.

"The weight of the body, it should be noted, rests chiefly upon the rear foot, and the hips should be allowed to go back as far as is possible without altering the balance effected by the position of the feet, and without deliberately throwing the body forward."

In his books, F.M. Alexander frequently gives descriptions of students upon first taking lessons. He repeatedly mentions that they have a decreased intra-thoracic capacity. In this video, we explore what exactly that means, and see how such an issue can affect our health.

"The striking feature in those who have practised customary breathing exercises is an undue lateral expansion of the lower ribs..."

This video is the first in a series that will look at what we can do to begin using our rational mind to change our posture. We ease into this process by looking at the adjustment of lifting the chest. But what is the chest? And in what way do we want to lift it? It's not quite as simple a matter as it may sound, but if we apply our reason, we can begin to understand how we can direct our movements in a rational way.

"I propose a great, a worthy subject for your study. ... I offer you a work superior even to those sciences which have been described to you; superior to all which the genius of a Michaelangelo or a Raphael could conceive; a work in comparison with which all the magnificences of science and art must pale. I propose that you should contemplate yourselves! Nothing is so unfamiliar to man as himself."
