In the Shire, we have liberty-oriented radio shows, tv shows, YouTube videos, and even newsprint! Early mover and prolific independent newsman and videographer Dave Ridley of RidleyReport.com hosted this panel of media producers including Mark Edge, Conan Salada, Darryl W. Perry, and JJ Schlessinger.
HB 216 – would end the prohibition of dimethyltryptamine aka DMT – filed by heroic 100% liberty rep Matt Santonastaso of Rindge. Though last year the criminal justice committee recommended to kill the psilocybin decrim bill, we once again patiently explained to them the religious use of a different chemical, DMT. Derek Januszewski, founder of the Ayahuasca church based in NH, “Pachamama Sanctuary” spoke in detail about his experience administering the potent hallucinogenic tea to thousands of willing people on a spiritual journey. Other ministers from the Shire Free Church and Church of the Invisible Hand also weighed in. The only person opposing the bill was a goon from the State Police, who trotted out the usual fearmongering about driving while impaired. When questioned by a younger state rep named Wheeler, the statie couldn’t answer to what extent any hallucinogens were involved in traffic accidents. He instead claimed he’d look into it for the state rep.

Keene District Court's Judge Edward J Burke tells Cop Block Radio's Eric Freerock that he'll accept his community service hours as certified by the Shire Free Church, however, he warns Freerock that one is not supposed to do community service for agencies with which one is affiliated. That makes no sense. Why wouldn't one be able to do community service for an agency one has already supported previously? If one has worked previously at say, the Community Kitchen, does that mean one is "affiliated" and cannot perform community service hours there? Or does "affiliated" mean that one is on a board of directors of said organization? That is not made clear during this hearing, and the community service order says nothing about a prohibition of affiliation with an agency. Regardless, Burke accepts the hours. Case closed. Here's the video of Freerock's trial for not showing his license to a state cop fast enough: http://freekeene.com/2014/01/31/copblock-radios-eric-freerock-on-trial-for-disobeying-an-officer-2014-01-30/

Thursday night Keene police received a call from a man claiming to be holding hostages at gunpoint inside 39 Central Square. As a result, at least eight officers (some toting M4 rifles) surrounded the building. Later, the BEARCAT rolled up and at least eight more officers, armed up with SWAT gear, piled out and entered via the front door.
Multiple liberty activists responded to the scene after local independent journalist Jared Goodell posted the news that armed police were on Central Square. (Goodell’s personal facebook profile is quickly becoming a go-to destination for breaking news in Keene.) Keene police kept the initial call from the alleged hostage-taker off of their two-way radio system, in what was the beginning of a campaign to preclude the public from actually knowing anything about what was happening in their midst.
All people in the streets knew was the police were hiding behind brick walls, brandishing guns and observing the block of buildings that includes 39 Central Square. To their credit, the Keene police were not preventing people from taking the risk of walking downtown, but they were at the same time not informing anyone about the risk that may have been present.

A couple of months ago, Free Keene blogger Rich Paul was arrested for “violation of probation”. Despite having failed a drug test and having admitted using cannabis, probation officer Jason Smith had chosen not to arrest Rich, per his testimony at the hearing below. Smith said he was arrested because a local hater snitched on Rich, claiming he’d violated probation by possessing a weapon.
Rich says he was using a camera monopod to take a defensive stance against two employees of Pedraza’s/Pour House who were threatening, and subsequently attacking, people who were chalking in Central Square. In point of fact, one Pour House employee who did a lot of threatening, is seen in the video of the incident, taking the camera Rich had put down and smashing it, among other criminal acts.
In a full violation of probation hearing at Cheshire superior court this week, Rich was jailed over the cannabis violations, but vindicated of the most serious charges: weapons & rioting. The video and testimony made it clear his actions were justified. He was legitimately using the monopod to prepare to defend himself and others from attack. As I understand it, in NH even felons are allowed to defend themselves against attack, and use anything in the vicinity in order to do so.
Regarding the cannabis violations, probation officer Smith testified that probation was pointless for Rich, as he is going to continue using cannabis for medical purposes. There are 500 people on probation, and only four agents, according to Smith. Judge John C Kissinger took Smith’s recommendation and agreed to remove Rich’s probation after he serves six months in the Keene Spiritual Retreat! (Factoring in his time served prior to the hearing and presuming he meets the NH “good time” requirements, he’ll be out in about three months, in time to speak at Keenevention 2014!)
Rich’s testimony is passionate and principled. This is a great court video:
The probation system is awful and is designed to violate the participants, over and over, keeping them in an unending cycle of destruction of their lives. Being in jail for a shorter time is far preferable to three years of drug tests, reporting, and home searches. Something I learned about the probation system is that in a probation hearing, there are no rules of evidence! Plus, the conviction requirement is “preponderance of the evidence”, which is a lower burden of proof than an actual criminal trial, which is “beyond a reasonable doubt”.
