I love Polybar because it's simple to configure and really great results can be achieved with minimal effort. That's why it was my bar of choice when it came to customising my Fluxbox installation.
However, out of the box it doesn't offer modules that allow you to minimise windows to the bar, or to add a drop-down menu.
Luckily this is all easily achievable using a custom script called polywins along with some xdotool jiggary-pokery.
In this video I take you through how I achieved what I believe to be a very good result.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

Desktop Linux still has less than 3% of the market. So if we are ever to increase that percentage we need to understand just who the current desktop users actually are.
In this long and winding ramble - you have been warned - I take the viewer through the journey that my mind has wandered through over the last few months.
I start by creating and expanding on a theoretical typology to describe the characteristics of different types of user.
This is not meant to reflect actual people. Rather, it is a set of categories that many of us will recognise, even though we may belong to several.
It's equally possible that I've missed important categories that should perhaps have been included here.
However, please see this as a playful attempt to understand rather than anything 'scientific'. Put bluntly, it's a bit of fun
This is followed up by a channel update, a discussion of some weirdness that has recently happened to the channel, and finally, the introduction of my GitLab repo.
Enjoy!!

A very quick mid-week video to demonstrate how easy it is to enable or disable support for specific features in Slackware.
This video uses Fluxbox as an example and I recompile the package to include support for imlib2 - which allows the use of icons in the Fluxbox menu.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

A brief how to showing what I do to customise the look and feel of my Debian install.
Commands used:
1. Lightdm configuration:
Install slick-greeter
Add/uncomment the following entries in etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:
greeter-session=slick-greeter
greeter-hide-users=false
Then save your preferred background in /usr/share/backgrounds
Create /etc/lightdm/slick-greeter.conf and add the following to the file:
[Greeter]
draw-user-backgrounds=false
draw-grid=false
background=/usr/share/backgrounds/nameof.jpg (or whatever you want to call it).
2. Grub configuration:
Use Gimp to rescale your image to 640x480 and save as a tga file
Copy tga file to /boot/grub
sudo update-grub
3. Plymouth configuration
Delete the word splash from this entry in /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
sudo update-grub

The Gnome Code of Conduct gave rise to a flamewar on Reddit and other social media channels. The key question though is whether it is fit for purpose and whether it does the job it was designed for - essentially to be the document that laid out the terms for the rules of engagement in the Gnome community.
Looking at this from an admittedly Boomers perspective I ague that it fails!
I know not everyone will agree but I've tried to present a balanced argument.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

Archcraft is a lightweight Arch distro that comes pre-configured with Openbox and Bspwm. What really makes this distro stand out though
is the theming and styling options that are available, especially in the Openbox variant.
To put it bluntly, this is a ricers dream. Want to change the overall style, tweak the look of the app launcher, change your terminal colours,
or generate a random wallpaper quickly and easily? If so, you'll appreciate the simple tools that let you do all of this with a couple of clicks
of the mouse.
Let's be blunt. I like to do my own ricing from scratch, but I know many people would prefer to start with a base that they can build on and tweak so that they end up with something that is unique to their own preferences. If that's you, then Archcraft could be what you've been looking for.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)
