The BLIGHTED lockdown generation | The Mallen Baker Show
In this round-up of the week, chaos over fantasy exam results highlights the damage done to young people by coronavirus lockdown. Joe Biden names Kamala Harris his running mate, signalling the real start of the presidential election. And Ben & Jerry’s diversifies from making ice cream into schooling the UK government on handling illegal immigration.
The Mallen Baker Show is aimed at all people who see themselves as change makers, with commentary on issues and change movements with a particular focus on climate change and environment, social issues, free speech and corporate social responsibility.
As the anniversary of the start of the Ukraine war approaches both sides burn through their resources at a rapid rate. The EU’s corruption crisis continues to deepen as more MEPs are named in the Qatargate scandal. Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is brought down after being damaged by the trans prisoners row. And in this week’s short thought, how to step back from the modern trend to attacking the opponent, not the argument.

The science of longevity - boosting human lifespan - is reportedly undergoing an exciting time of possibility. Indeed, some say that we're not so far away from significant breakthroughs that could increase the lifespan of people alive today. Are they right? And if they are - how radically does this change the dynamic of how our societies would work? We already expect an aging population - but what if the aged population just refuses to die? Let's discuss.

In this round-up of the week, America sees a week of protests and riots and police brutality and political manoeuvring and almost no social distancing. The result of the terrible events that led to the death of George Floyd.
What's the unfortunate truth why the protests are possibly going to result in the opposite to what they want? What are President Trump and Joe Biden doing to try to ensure events benefit their campaign for election? And what just happened that means we might get even worse violence further down the road?
If you want to solve the problem, you have to know what the problem is. And that’s what we’re getting wrong. Let’s discuss.

James Hansen released a new paper arguing that climate sensitivity was higher than previously thought, all the Paris Agreement targets are blown out of the water, and the world will have no choice but to resort to geo-engineering. Other climate scientists, however, are available - and some of them vociferously disagreed. Let's discuss.

A new paper was released last week that claimed to show that, when it comes to covid-19, lockdowns don’t work. Three economists associated with Johns Hopkins University produced a study that concluded that overall lockdowns had reduced mortality by just 0.2 percent and said: “Lockdown policies are ill-founded and should be rejected as a pandemic policy instrument.” That's an important conclusion - how does it stand up to critical scrutiny?

In this video, we reflect on the state of division and partisanship in the US, and we review the history of how we ended up here. It’s both surprising how long a journey it’s been, and it’s shocking how deliberate and how powerful have been the techniques that made it happen.

Political leaders and various experts have been heard to say in recent weeks and months that we have reached the point where we need to "learn to live with Covid". In principle, that’s obviously true. But what does that phrase actually mean?
As one commentator noted, : “For some, the phrase ‘living with Covid’ has become shorthand for ‘let’s not do anything else’”. But then others have said that, in their view, learning to live with Covid means wearing masks in indoor situations forever.
There’s quite a gap between those two, so what’s the reality behind what we can expect about how this is going to settle down?
