How to get rid of RFI hum noise from the AM or MW broadcast band. Eliminate the radio hum noise. I recently was reorganizing some of my coax cables and I discovered the source of that dreaded humming noise on the AM or MW broadcast band. When I disconnected my coax cable coming from my Discone antenna from the roof into a switch in my basement shack, the humming noise would stop, therefore I isolated the issue and try to ground the switch emitting that humming noise. First I tried to connect my ground coming from outside my basement window, there is a ground block to a cold water pipe acting as a ground outside, the hum did go away but I can hear a little bit of the hum. Next I could of connected to the copper pipe going to my radiator. But I decided to try using one of the screws from my switch to a nearby Grounded power strip and surge protector that has cable coax connectors. I made a 3 feet piece of copper wire or speaker wire, on one end I crimped on a screw type terminal connector and on the other end I used an alligator clip. The alligator is clipped around one of the coax connector and the other end is screwed on using one of the switch screws to complete a ground and eliminating the humming noise. It seems to work well and I will keep it like this until I can relocate my Discone antenna hopefully later on this spring. The annoying humming noise on the AM broadcast band is fully gone for now. Thank God. I can enjoy listening and DXing the AM or MW stations daily again. Of course it may not be addressing the real issue on where the original noise source, I tried for months to find to original noise source and some are beyond my control as I believe some of the noise is from my neighbors. Sometimes a solution like this is the only way. There are also more expensive solutions, but in my case it didn't have to come down to that. I'm no expert or claim to be one. This was my finding and results may vary. It all comes down to experiment and keep looking, the solution may be looking right at you.
