In this video i'm showing how to pot up seedlings for moving outdoors into the nursery. Most importantly, no more potting plants on the ground and ending up with a sore back, finally we've got a potting table thanks to the father in law for making it! :D

This year we're finally growing tomatoes again, although just a few and planted a little late as the new greenhouse was being readied in early Summer. Any advise is welcome! Thank You. This video includes a little greenhouse update, but the full build video is yet to come once we get woodchips to finish it off nicely.

A few days ago we were running a full Homesteading Workshop Demo introducing participants to no dig gardening, growing and preserving food, chicken keeping, herbal remedies, backup power & lights and home brewing. It was a great day with full attendance, lots of enthusiasm and networking. A big thanks to Teresa O'Brien from the Roscommon LEADER for facilitating the event. Keep an eye on our website or book tickets for future events on our online shop below.

We've been using a lot of tools in our years of gardening and it's about time we make some content all about cuttings tools that we believe will benefit you greatly. In this video I'm comparing 2 Secateurs, one very cheap but essential and the other a bit of a luxury but a must have for daily use. Are both of them worth it?

At the moment we're clearing out the greenhouse and getting ready to start the second wave of seeds in trays. These will be repotted or planted out directly in about 6-8 weeks. In the mean time we'll get a chance to do a bit of well overdue landscaping around the place whilst keeping the greenhouse and gardens productive.

Happy New Year and an Abundant New Growing Season from Birdland Cottage!
The winners of the ancient vegetable grow challenge have been selected by a random number generator. Congratulations to Mark Stacey and Darragh Connaughton! Your tubers will be sent out in 1-2 work days.
In February we will be running our Spring seed giveaway raffle again. We have a lot of new seeds for growing exciting new plants and trees in the upcoming growing season of 2020. We like to buy seeds from a lot of different places around the world, especially supporting local vendors. We will make a video showing you what we’re planning to grow once most of our new seeds have arrived. A lot of new perennial food, medicinal and ornamental flowers, trees and herbs excellent for the insects and other wildlife.
The long awaited results of the 6 ancient vegetable grow experiment are here. This spring we planted a number of edible tubers in 12 large pots and we are going to give the harvest away in a free giveaway raffle. The aim is to show that you can grow food anywhere even without access to land. We do like potatoes but instead this time we included something a little more exotic - Oca, Mashua and Jerusalem Artichoke. In previous videos you can see how we planted 12 large pots filled with compost mulched with woodchips and volcanic rock dust. They were kept in a permanent location in the middle of our nursery in full sun and with nearly zero maintenance.
To enter for FREE simply subscribe below. (If you are already a subscriber just reply to our latest email relating to this raffle.) You can still enter until the winners are announced on Sunday the 12th of January 2020 at 2pm.

Oeprei is another surprisingly underutilized perennial vegetable from Belgium where it enjoys great popularity. It can be grown as an annual in a no dig bed just like garlic or planted into the mulched perennial fringes of your garden and harvested as needed in years to come. It's also an ideal zero maintenance vegetable for food forests and forest gardens. The flavour is somewhere between leek and onion but without the spice of the onion, certainly unique.
