Hahei is an attractive beach flanked by pohutukawa trees and piles of pink shells on the extreme north. The offshore islands act as breakwaters, making this beach ideal for swimming, sailing and fishing.
The north coast and islands form the boundaries of the maritime reserve, and this is a popular destination for diving and kayaking. Reefs, caves, passages and soft sediments are the ideal habitat for a wide variety of plants, fish, molluscs and crustaceans.
At the southern end of Hahei Beach, the Te Pare Historic Reserve is the site of an ancient Maori pa (fortified village).
Hahei Town has charming accommodations, businesses and places to eat. Be sure to book early in the summer (December through February).
From the beautiful Hahei Beach, you can walk to Cathedral Cove Inlet, where you will find a natural archway that deserves photographic attention.
From the north end of the beach, an hour-long pedestrian path takes you across the top of the cliff and down to the cove. Here, a cavern with a giant archway passes through a cape of white rocks to link two remote inlets. The cathedral-like archway gives the area an overall air of splendor. The beach is sandy, with shady pohutukawa trees - it's a perfect place for a picnic and swimming.
