“I Believe in the Holy Spirit.” “I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church.” Accident - that which is not of the essence of something. An accident does not exist in itself but in another as in a subject. It is not a thing but the mode of a thing. Of the nine categories of accident, relation, quality, and quantity are the most important. For example, “being six foot tall” is not essential to being human. It is a “quality” of a human subject and thus accidental. Begotten - the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son in the Trinity, signifying that the Son is eternally generated or brought forth from the Father, sharing the same divine nature as the Father. It signifies that the Son is eternally generated or brought forth from the Father, not in a temporal or physical sense, but in a spiritual and divine sense. This generation is not a process that occurred at a particular point in time, but is an eternal reality that has always been true and will always be true. Manichaeism - a false religion that promoted dualism, the belief that there are two equal and opposing forces in the universe: good and evil. Manichaeism held that matter was evil and spirit was good, and that the goal of human life was to liberate the divine spark within oneself from the material world and return it to the spiritual realm. Augustine criticized Manichaeism for its rejection of free will and its denial of the goodness of the material world, which he saw as a fundamental error that led to a distorted understanding of God and creation.
