The Origin of Envy & Narcissism - René Girard

At the beginning of human communities there is a mystery surrounding how our ancestors created human societies and religions. Some theories focus on how human groupings aid survival for individual human families. Others focused on how a larger brain allowed the ability to understand the intentions of others, and hence group coordination. With a larger brain and the ability to reflect, early humans could reflect on their place in human society, mortality, and the meaning of life. Being able to benefit from shared knowledge, made humanity flourish. Yet despite the benefits of increased group living, humans have always had a sense of danger that came with the price of living in groups. One theory in particular, by the social science philosopher René Girard, clarified the reflective part of the mind that allows for humans to learn from others. He called it mimetics, or the ability to imitate.

The City. The city can feel boxed in and stifling. The shapes of square buildings have the perception of stress and boredom. Despite increases in the standard of living while people move to cities, people aren’t getting any happier. Suicide rates often hover around the same level for many OECD countries.
When boredom and stress take over, due to life’s disappointments, people often look for anything to numb the pain. One of the heathier ways for me to escape was, getting outdoors. When one gets into a forest, or near mountains the lines aren’t so straight. The trails aren’t so predictable. The colours are refreshing. I can find new labels and perceptions that are relaxing and nourishing. The boredom and stress melts away as I go...hunting for Flow.

Similar to the Pleasure Principle and the Nirvana Principle, Rank sees how individuals need a balance between desire and rest. He calls the contracted state of desire "partialization" and the completion of a goal or a reunion with oneness being a like a "totalist." Completion, oneness, and totality have a finality to them like death and there is a desire to return to partialization, but too much partialization is exhausting and makes one feel separated and lonely.

The end point of therapy is to successfully, love, work, and or sublimate in healthy activities and relationships. The impediments to that are in the external environment, with obstacles, but there are internal obstacles to be considered as well. You want to see and feel how your inner world is holding you back.
