Video notes:
1. Don't think you're going to learn Old English overnight
- It's like learning a whole new language
2. Start with Simple prose texts, and not poetry or epics.
Start with the side-by-side translation:
Apollonius of Tyre
Ælfric's lives of the saints
Ælfric's colloquy
THE HOMILIES OF THE ANGLO-SAXON CHURCH.
Aelfric's Homilies on Judith, Esther, and the Maccabees
Ælfric on the Book of Job
The Bible
3. Embrace that Old English is non-rigid.
- many ways to say the same thing
- variation in spelling
4. Look in databases for Old English grammar books
5. When looking at a text, it's best to have a 2 tabs open on your browser
- Old English translator
- Old English dictionary
6. Join facebook groups that are about Old English
7. Try to apply it in your everyday life.
- say the name of the object
- talk to your friends or family in OE
