Larger-than-life willy wagtail birds, a flowering kurrajong tree and a stingless bee celebrates cultural empowerment and acts as a reminder of the Indigenous landscape. Many Aboriginal nations have a relationship with the willy wagtail and, although diverse, the playful bird is generally known as a messenger. These Australian fantails are active feeders — they are constantly moving, hopping around and foraging — this has a connection to the modern context of this vibrant inner-city laneway filled with buzzing bars and restaurants. The Aboriginal language words were provided by Gaja (Aunty) Kerry Charlton; “marumba” meaning “good” and “kittibilla” meaning “day”. Perfectly situated in the middle of Brisbane’s cultural hub near Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Museum and South Bank, Fish Lane also offers an array of amazing publicly accessible art in the Fish Lane Arts Precinct. Fish Lane started life as Soda Lane, a critical artery servicing the working docks of South Brisbane. As Brisbane grew South Brisbane evolved into a bustling commercial hub servicing the young colony via the local fleet – for 150 years a rough and tumble working class dockside suburb. World Expo 88 forever changed South Brisbane and the subsequent evolution of the South Bank Parklands and adjacent Cultural Precinct bought investment and attention. Fish Lane however languished in the shadows – neglected and forgotten. In 2006 Brisbane City Council commissioned the first Master Plan for Fish Lane, identifying it’s potential as a key connector linking the CBD and Cultural Precinct to South Brisbane and West End. Little progress was made however until Aria Property Group developed ‘Austin’ Apartments at the head of Fish Lane in 2014. Together ‘Austin’ Apartments and the refurbishment of the adjacent block brought a new focus on retail and the public realm incorporating lighting, signage landscaping and public art. Fish Lane again sprang to life. Today Fish Lane is an exemplar inner city urban renewal precinct – bustling again with bars, restaurants, cafes, art, galleries, music and events. Botanica: Contemporary Art Outside ran at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens between 12-21 May 2023. Ten large-scale installations, ranging from sculpture and projections through to augmented reality and interactive creations transformed the gardens into an outdoor gallery. This is Vestigia Arborum by Soma Lumia Find out more about the artwork: Like pristine natural systems, this light-based installation is impacted directly by the number of people visiting. Fusing human interaction with technology, the art will change as more people view it. The title Vestigia Arborum, resembling Latin binomial classification, refers to both ‘garden’ and ‘traces’ of something that once existed but is no more. The expansive entwined branches of the tree perform as a canvas of the work, reminding us of the living tangible and cumulative impact of human actions on this fragile and precious planet. Artist biography Tasmanian tech art collective Soma Lumia is a tech-art collective based in lutruwita (Tasmania) founded in 2015, dedicated to questioning the relationship between humans and nature, perception and the illusory, actual and virtual. Their work delivers considered, playful and moving experiences that help us understand what it means to be human on this fragile and precious planet. Known for its distinctively hybrid media-based arts practice, Soma Lumia investigates the boundary between what is real and what is not, what is authentic and what is counterfeit; it navigates this through questioning the relationship between humans and nature, perception and the illusory, actual and virtual.
