Both the Chancellor and EVCP have been supporters of The Biology Scholars Program (BSP) and so this event was to bring the students and alumni together to thank them.
Adan Garcia-Mecinas (current student) spoke about his background and experience.
Dr. Amanda Perez (Assistant Chief of Emergency Medicine Kaiser Manteca and Modesto) spoke about her background including how BSP played a role in her success at Cal and in how she practices medicine as a frontline physician and Assistant Chief; she now has a scholarship she created for students.
John Matsui spoke about EVCP Breslauer's passion for baseball and that he played catcher and tied the position of catcher (seeing the whole field) with the role of EVCP. EVCP Breslauer was presented with a gift of a blue/yellow catcher's mitt with his name embroidered on it.
Breslauer said a few words about BSP - specifically about how when he saw the success of the students (statistics) he was pleased to support BSP - it "made him feel good". He also said how touched he was by the event.
John Matsui also thanked the Chancellor and presented him with a honoring blanket with a feather motif and spoke to the Chancellor about how the feather represents our (BSP) gratitude and respect.
The Chancellor spoke about his background (low-income community where no one graduates from high school) and how he had "a John Matsui" in his life who saw his potential and provided a scholarship to go to a better high school. The Chancellor stated in his speech that "everyone needs a John Matsui". At the end of the program the BSP students and alumni held up signs that read THANK YOU! for the Chancellor and Provost.

BERKELEY -- Global energy firm BP announced today (Thursday, Feb. 1) that it has selected the University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to lead an unprecedented $500 million research effort to develop new sources of energy and reduce the impact of energy consumption on the environment.
The funding will create the Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI), which initially will focus its research on biotechnology to produce biofuels — that is, turning plants and plant materials, including corn, field waste, switchgrass and algae, into transportation fuels.
