Anyway, he was driving out on Oxford Milford Road which is reported to have been haunted but he didn’t believe it. He had even heard some of the tales from this road but still didn’t believe them. One of those was a tale of Romeo and Juliet which ended in the tragic death of Romeo in a motorcycle accident in the 1940s… It was time for the trucker to take a break for the night so he turned up the drive to an abandoned farmhouse which seemed like a place no one would bother him. The guys over here have just won themselves a big case down at the courthouse, and they're out here having a great big celebration. Now you may wonder about the location. Well, what I'm going to do today is skip the entire history part because the model has so much detail to talk about. So, I'm going to go straight onto the product review and it's of a Red Owl grocery store/J.R. Watkins building. This was made by Menards and Menards has made many, many different buildings in HO scale and O scale for the model railroads. Now I know my big scale is 1:64th scale, so it's not quite right for me, but I found these O-Gauge buildings, while they're a little big, are not really that big. So, they work well on my diorama. It is about refining crude oil into over 6,000 products necessary to sustain our standard of living. You will be surprised what is refined and made from crude oil. Smash the like button and let’s start with the refinement of crude oil. I found this fascinating as I really had no idea the history of oil. No one knows who, or what civilization discovered oil. But we do know the Chinese were among the first civilizations to refine oil. Crude oil was distilled by Arab chemists, with clear descriptions given in Arabic. In the 9th century, oil fields were exploited in the area around modern Baku, Azerbaijan. Arab and Persian chemists also distilled crude oil to produce flammable products for military purposes. Through Islamic Spain, distillation became available in Western Europe by the 12th century. During these early periods of refined oil, the primary use was for military weapons. Later on, refined petroleum products were used for heat and other products. The industrial revolution was brought on by steam power. And steam power remained supreme for moving huge objects such as ships, tractors, and locomotives. At first, this steam was produced by burning coal. As oil refining processes became more efficient, the conversion from coal to oil was on. Ours is a carbon-based world. Everything has carbon in it. You, me everything. The carbon/hydrogen chain can be broken down and re-shaped to make another product. I assume that many of you are familiar with the term “Fractional Distillation”. It is the first step in turning crude oil into usable product such as lpg, gasoline, and diesel fuel, plus 6,000 other products. The process depends on boiling in a closed tube. Using water as a simple example. When water is heated, its temperature rises to 212 degrees Fahrenheit and stays there. This temperature is its boiling point and once it is reached, the water won't get any hotter. From this point on the heat is used to change the water into steam. (Turn liquid into vapor.) Once all the water has turned to steam, it can then be heated beyond 212 degrees Fahrenheit. As soon as the steam cools below the boiling point, it turns back into water the vapor condenses back to water. Every liquid has its own boiling point determined by the size and shape of its molecules. The Liquid water plus heat becomes steam. The steam is condensed and becomes a liquid. Fractional distillation of crude oil is the main activity that supports our standard of living. Like everything new technologies are developed, but so far none have the ability to replace oil in our world. Oil well pumps are the machines that feed our refineries.
