Having just updated my Jeenodes with the Optiboot bootloader, I had some LED strings to play with. SPI controllable, the only thing to worry about was the interrupt driven RFM12B also attached to the SPI bus. Thankfully the FastSPI library already wraps all the important functions in cli() and sei() calls. As evident, Optiboot boots like lightning, and the FastSPI library can fiddle bits at a fair rate of knots. The last sketch is FastSPI-Christmas for some festive fun.
