File Type: pdf
In this compact and pithy book, the distinguished and prolific psychoanalyst Salman Akhtar steps out of his consulting room to address certain matters of urgent global concern. These include migration across national borders, the current refugee crisis, ethno-racial prejudice, subjective distress of minorities, and, above all, the forever-present ominous shadow of terrorism. Akhtar evolves and advocates a uniquely anthropological psychoanalysis which is a blend of depth psychology and humanities, including sociology, economics, political science, history, and , of course, anthropology. He deconstructs what seems self-evident and confronts his readers with some socio-politically unpleasant realities, both within psychoanalysis and in the prevalent perspectives on the on-going turmoil and bloodshed in todays world. His book is not all doom and gloom, however. It also delineates ameliorative strategies for dealing with the pain of the disenfranchised and the misguided violence of the radicalized. This is applied psychoanalysis at its best.**ReviewSalman Akhtars book is an impressive and passionate plea for a culturally relevant psychoanalysis. His deep knowledge of the field enables him to describe the issues with a bilateral flow of information between psychoanalysis and the humanities. He brilliantly explores current questions of migration, minorities, social prejudices, and terrorism. He also offers strategies for diminution of the pain of minorities and of prejudices as well as guidelines for the remediation of processes of dehumanization associated with terrorism. This book is an urgently needed psychoanalytic contribution to our present social and political problems. *Werner Bohleber, Frankfurt*This is an extremely captivating, timely and courageous book. It reveals Salman Akhtars highly original hermeneutics and pragmatic vision of the current global crisis. Akhtar addresses the contemporary chaos and dislocation of the spirit of our times from the lens of his anthropological psychoanalysis. He speaks the unspeakable and unmasks the politically uncomfortable, while remaining faithful to his personal sense of poetics, psychoanalysis, and fairness in human affairs.ul l*l ulGohar Homayounpour, TehranIn this book, the prolific psychoanalyst, Salman Akhtar, leaves the comfort of clinical practice and turns his gaze to current global turmoil. By forging dialectal links between unconscious intrapsychic dynamics and sociocultural phenomena such as prejudice, the problems of minorities, and the complex origins of terrorism, he lays down the groundwork for a truly modern anthropological psychoanalysis. Akhtars book needs to be known not only to all psychoanalysts but outside the psychoanalytic circles as well.ul l*l ulHanni Mann-Shalvi, Tel AvivAkhtar makes a brilliant case for an anthropologically-informed psychoanalysis and a culturally relativistic approach to patients and to political praxis. He recognizes that we, and those we treat and oppose, do not exist in a cultural vacuum rather we and they think and work in our respective cultures with manifold unconscious assumptions. His work is deeply informed on the national, regional, and cultural permutations of Muslims and Islam and he offers trenchant recommendations for constructively dealing with the terrorism of radical and radicalized youth.*Peter Loewenberg, Los Angeles*About the Author Salman Akhtar, MD, was born in India and completed his medical and psychiatric education there. Upon arriving in the USA in 1973, he repeated his psychiatric training at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and then obtained psychoanalytic training from the Philadelphia Psychoanalytic Institute. Currently, he is Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College and a training and supervising analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. He has authored, edited or co-edited more than 300 publications including books on psychiatry and psychoanalysis and several collections of poetry. How societys undervaluing of life puts all of us at riskand the groundbreaking economic measure that can fix it Like it or not, sometimes we need to put a monetary value on peoples lives. In the past, government agencies used the financial cost of death to monetize the mortality risks of regulatory policies, but this method vastly undervalued life. Pricing Lives tells the story of how the government came to adopt an altogether different approach--the value of a statistical life, or VSLand persuasively shows how its more widespread use could create a safer and more equitable society for everyone. In the 1980s, W. Kip Viscusi used the method to demonstrate that the benefits of requiring businesses to label hazardous chemicals immensely outweighed the costs. VSL is the risk-reward trade-off that people make about their health when considering risky job choices. With it, Viscusi calculated how much more money workers would demand to take on hazardous jobs, boosting calculated benefits by an order of magnitude. His current estimate of the value of a statistical life is $10 million. In this book, Viscusi provides a comprehensive look at all aspects of economic and policy efforts to price lives, including controversial topics such as whether older peoples lives are worth less and richer peoples lives are worth more. He explains why corporations need to abandon the misguided cost-of-death approach, how the courts can profit from increased application of VSL in assessing liability and setting damages, and how other countries consistently undervalue risks to life. Pricing Lives proposes sensible economic guideposts to foster more protective policies and greater levels of safety in the United States and throughout the world. **Review From probably the worlds leading thinker on the valuation of mortality risks, Pricing Lives makes a fundamental, enduring contribution.Cass Sunstein, Harvard Law School This book presents the argument that not only should there be a monetary value placed on lives, but that the actual value used by regulatory agencies and courts is generally too low. Viscusi has done a real service by making these ideas accessible to the general public.Joseph P. Newhouse, Harvard Medical School Viscusi is the foremost expert on using benefit-cost analysis for safety decision making. In Pricing Lives, he provides a highly readable yet comprehensive overview of the value of a statistical life, a crucial component of such analysis. Importantly, he shows how it can be more fully exploited by corporations, courts, and government regulators as a basis for cost-effective safety decisions.John W. Ruser, president and CEO of the Workers Compensation Research Institute Pricing Lives is an accessible, example-rich, and interestingly written account of the ways in which lives ought to be accorded monetary value for the purposes of policymaking. Kip Viscusi is the foremost authority on the subject.Steve Shavell, Harvard Law School Written by an expert at the top of his field, this book explains how to perform better analysis of public and private decisions using the value of a statistical life, or VSL. Viscusi not only covers many substantive topicsfrom environmental to vehicle and occupational safetybut also provides invaluable guidance on how to deal with some of the thorny issues of VSL.Frank Sloan, Duke University From the Back Cover From probably the worlds leading thinker on the valuation of mortality risks, Pricing Lives makes a fundamental, enduring contribution.--Cass Sunstein, Harvard Law School This book presents the argument that not only should there be a monetary value placed on lives, but that the actual value used by regulatory agencies and courts is generally too low.
