Fermented pickled turnip is what we are making in the kitchen today, recipe included. Fermented Pickled Turnips are a favorite around our Canadian Homestead. Turnip is not always a favorite, but with this sort of flavor, it disappears quickly. They are great on sandwich or served on cheese and meat trays.
Today we are discussion raising geese and our American Buff Goose Flock. We figured it was worth sharing some thoughts on building a flock of geese or other poultry from our perspective of raising poultry for over a decade. Hopefully you find this video on raising geese interesting or at least some food for thought related to the topic of building a goose flock or flock of other poultry such as chickens or ducks.
Thanks so much for watching!

Backyard Greenhouse Build Part 6 | The Old Window Greenhouse Is Finished
Growing spaces are important now more than ever. And we finally have one of our growing spaces finished! Its been some time but we have completed the old window greenhouse and now can use it for at least three season growing (will be a good season extender!). A backyard greenhouse is something anyone who has the space should consider and this is just one way to build one but has worked well for us using mostly recycled materials!

Farm Ponderings:
An Example self-sufficient vs sustainable
It's really difficult to be truly self-sufficient but moving to be more sustainable is a bit more achivable for most of us. Though this is not a perfect example hopfully it will help explain the difference between beeing self-sufficient and sustainable as it pertains to a homestead level (i.e. producing your own food). Hopefully you find this interesting or at the very least enjoy watching the guppies!

Ginger Experiment 3.0 | Growing Ginger On Our Canadian Homestead
Last year, we were mildly successful with our experiment of growing ginger on our Ontario farm. But for 2021, we have stepped it up a bit and are hoping for some fantastic results. We have always done container gardening for them, but this year we have gone bigger and used better tubers saved from what we grew last year.
Be sure to subscribe and follow along as we keep you up to date on how we do with the ginger this year. Be sure to drop a comment and let us know if you have had success with ginger.

Fodder beets are an old time method of growing food for livestock. They have been used for a very long time but as with many old ways of doing things have fallen out of favor in modern times. But red mammoth mangel beets can be used on a small scale as livestock feed for rabbits or other animals on the homestead. In this video we talk about our experiences to date growing fodder beets and discuss some potential hurdles that we may need to overcome in our quest for a more sustainable way to feed livestock and shorten supply chains and dependency on purchased livestock feed.
