Video transcript:
Hi, I'm Michael Corayer and this is Psych Exam Review where I answer common questions and explain the key concepts in psychology.
In this video I'm going to talk about some early approaches to psychology. We're going to start with a guy named Wilhelm Wundt and Wundt lived from 1832 to 1920, here's a picture of him here and he's generally credited with starting the world's first experimental psychology lab at the University of Leipzig.

In this video I go into more detail on the retina, describing the two main types of photoreceptors (rods and cones) and how they operate in different levels of light. Next I describe the composition of receptive fields and how retinal ganglion cells communicate differing patterns of light on the receptive fields. Finally I explain lateral inhibition and how it relates to the illusion caused by Mach Bands, which demonstrates that we don't actually see the "real" levels of light in the world but rather an exaggerated version which emphasizes contrast.

In this video I explain the concept of long-term potentiation, which refers to the strengthening of neural connections due to repeated synchronous firing. Repeated firing leads to changes in chemical signaling between the two neurons, influencing neurotransmitter and receptor activity. Next I introduce an example of this with the possible role of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (for the neurotransmitter glutamate) in memory and learning. This has been demonstrated in mice given NMDA antagonists which then impaired their performance on the Morris water maze.

In this video I describe how treatments can broadly be categorized into biomedical treatments and psychotherapy. Next I explain three approaches to psychotherapy: psychoanalytic, humanistic, and behavioral. I describe the general principles of these approaches and some of the key terms associated with each, along with examples of how these might be applied in treating specific cases.

In this video I consider how we view ourselves and how biases, personal constructs, schema, and behavior interact in shaping personality. I provide an example of Albert Bandura's reciprocal determinism for understanding the relationship between predisposition, the social environment, and behavior, which we will consider in more detail in the next video.

In this video I discuss the importance of emotional expression in social interaction and how we use signals from others to gauge their emotional states. This also relates to display rules for when it's appropriate to express certain emotions and attempts we make to deceive others by intensifying, deintensifying, masking, or neutralizing our facial expressions. Next I discuss potential cues for assessing the authenticity of an emotional expression, including morphology, symmetry, duration, and temporal patterning. Lastly I consider other techniques for assessing when someone is telling the truth and the accuracy of polygraphs for detecting lying via physiological changes.

In this video I discuss compliance and persuasion, which are direct social pressures to comply with requests or modify attitudes or behavior. First I discuss the distinction between the central route and peripheral routes to persuasion, then describe several compliance techniques. These include the foot-in-the-door technique, the door-in-the-face technique, the not-so-free sample, and the that's-not-all technique.
