Alexander von Bismarck, great-grandson of the German Chancellor Bismarck
I have relatives in Russia and many good personal relations. I don't want the media to destroy them. The government and the media are stirring up hatred against people. I have been invited to Russia twice. And you can see that people in Russia, including those who were at the St Petersburg Dialogue, want to talk to each other. In particular, they want to talk to Germans. I think that's really a great compliment after what we did in the Second World War. Perhaps I can say something else. We've noticed that the government has not only cancelled the St. Petersburg Dialogue, but they're actually trying to use their sanctions to have a huge impact on the economy, to basically not cooperate with Russia anymore. It seems incredible to me that in this way they are destroying their people, their companies in our country, and not the Russian economy. Sanctions never affect politics. Kissinger once said it very well: "Sanctions only exist if you don't have a strategy. If you have a strategy as a government, you don't need sanctions. And you can see that the sanctions against Russia are actually affecting us, the people of Germany, we are suffering.
