A prominent leaker of Pokemon-related news says directly that the Pokemon franchise's 9th gen of games is planned to launch in 2022.
Pokemon fans are being spoiled this holiday season. Not only are Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl arriving on November 19, but Pokemon Legends: Arcaeus, a new 3D iteration of the franchise with semi-open world Pokemon catching, launching January 28. The Pokemon Company may have no plans to slow down in 2022, either. A leaker is claiming they've heard a new Pokemon game, the 9th generation of the main franchise, will arrive in 2022, as well.
The report comes from Twitter account Centro Leaks, which frequently shares leaks from within the Pokemon community but doesn't provide sources or evidence of any kind. Regardless, they have shared accurate leaks in the past, which makes this potential leak notable. According to Centro Leaks, the 9th-generation Pokemon games are "well in development" and will launch in 2022. No further details about the release are provided.
Obviously, Centro Leaks is not an entirely reliable source on this matter. Yet it's an intriguing possibility, nevertheless. A late 2022 release for Game Freak's next Pokemon game would still provide plenty of time for it to roll out DLC for Pokemon Legends: Arceus, if it had the mind to. Annual iterations aren't outside of The Pokemon Company's ability, either. Between 2016 and 2019, The Pokemon Company released Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon, Let's Go, Pikachu!, Let's Go, Eevee!, Sword, and Shield. If anything, a year without Pokemon is abnormal.
Pokémon GO has been going strong for five whole years now, managing to dominate headlines from the off when it first launched in 2016 and continuing to thrive even in the midst of a global pandemic – which, for an app that primarily wants you to go outside, is rather impressive.
But all good things must come to an end at some point, right? With new Pokémon being added to the game on a regular basis, the app's new inclusions are far outpacing the main series' new monster output, and as of right now, more than two-thirds of all existing Pokémon are present in Pokémon GO. So what happens when Niantic catches up and runs out of new additions?
Well, it turns out that this very dilemma is already being thought about, and don't worry – things aren't going to come to an end after all. Speaking to Eurogamer, Niantic's EMEA product marketing manager Philip Marz shared some info:
"...From a content standpoint, even if there's a limitation in terms of the Pokémon that are still available, there's a couple of different other initiatives we are thinking about to keep the momentum going, actually, and really pay into that mission and ambition to make Pokémon Go a forever game not only for
