STORE WARS: Target, Walmart & Home Depot go to war against Organized Retail theft
SEVERAL retailers are reportedly going to “war” against theft and it could affect thousands of side hustlers and change store prices.
Retail crime went up by 26 percent last year, threatening several businesses such as Target, Walmart, and Walgreens.
Target is expected to lose $600million in profits due to crime, while Walgreens reported a 52 percent increase in crime since 2019.
And crimes are becoming more and more violent, according to the National Retail Federation.
“This is not petty theft. It's not somebody who can't afford to eat tomorrow,” said James Kehoe, chief financial officer of Walgreens, during the company’s first-quarter earnings call.
"These are gangs that actually go in and empty our stores of beauty products.
The administration of New York City Mayor Eric Adams has listed a new job for a rat czar to tame the infamous rodent problem in the Big Apple.
The posting, which, is officially seeking a "director of rodent migration" who will work to advance the city's efforts to address policy matters in the five boroughs related to curbing the recent increase of rats during the pandemic.
"Do you have what it takes to do the impossible? A virulent vehemence for vermin? A background in urban planning, project management or government? And most importantly, the drive, determination and killer instinct needed to fight the real enemy -- New York City's relentless rat population?" the posting reads.
"If so, your dream job awaits: New York's Citywide Director of Rodent Migration."
The tongue-in-cheek posting adds that "rats are not our friend" and are "enemies that must be vanquished."
The role - with an expected pay range between $120,000 and $170,000 -- reports to the deputy mayor for operations and successful candidates are required to be a New York City resident with a bachelor's degree, at least five years of relevant experience and a "swashbuckling attitude, crafty humor and general aura of badassery."
The job posting comes as New Yorkers have increasingly complained about rats.

It’s been one year since people protesting police violence marched to Seattle's East Police Precinct and found that police had abandoned the area. That started a protest zone that garnered national attention — the CHOP.
After a Minneapolis police officer murdered George Floyd on May 25, 2020, anti-police brutality demonstrations sprung up around Seattle. People marched from downtown up to the East Police Precinct building on Capitol Hill. The precinct became the epicenter of protests.
Angelica Campbell said it was important to keep showing up to the East Precinct day after day.
"I'm going to have children that are Black," Campbell said. "And I don't want to come out here and march because they got shot.”

Americans largely avoided CNN during Father’s Day weekend as the network continued to hemorrhage support from the demographic most coveted by advertisers.
CNN managed only 67,000 average viewers between ages 25-54 from June 18-19 for its smallest weekend audience since 2000 in the category that pays the bills. It was the network’s third-worst performance in the critical demo during a weekend since 1993.
It was also the network’s smallest audience on a Saturday among the demo since October 1993 when only 58,000 tuned in, and only the second time that CNN delivered under 60,000 demo viewers on a Saturday in 29 years.

While the latest numbers on the state of jobs in the US showed that the US was still creeping toward recovery, one thing remained consistent: The economy isn't working for millions of workers.
Even with the Delta wave easing, the number of jobs added in November was a big miss compared with expectations. On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said just 210,000 nonfarm payrolls were added in November — a far cry from the 550,000 that economists surveyed by Bloomberg forecast.
Last month, 7.4 million Americans fell into the government's official definition of being unemployed, which meant they were out of work and actively looking for a job.
Among those, 2.2 million had been unemployed for at least 27 weeks, which suggested that many prospective workers had been struggling to find a job for months.

Venice Beach, once an iconic destination in Los Angeles, is facing an unfortunate resurgence of urban campers. Shocking footage shows the beachfront marred by tents, grocery carts, tarps, and litter, as the homeless population returns with a vengeance. Last summer, authorities had conducted a massive cleanup, but it seems like they are back to square one, playing a frustrating game of whack-a-mole.
Located on the picturesque Pacific Ocean, Venice Beach has become an attractive spot for the homeless, leading to an ongoing problem. The situation has become a hotbed of debate, with critics pointing out the failure of Democrat policies on homelessness, crime, and drugs in the area. Residents are now grappling with an increasing stream of garbage and elaborate encampments that obstruct the once vibrant promenade.
The issue is not exclusive to Venice Beach, as similar challenges persist across Los Angeles County. Shelter-in-place rules during the pandemic prevented officials from evicting encampments, allowing them to flourish. However, these camps are not confined to merely surviving; they are thriving with luxuries like pools and recording studios, raising concerns about the lack of enforcement.
As the debate continues, citizens demand action and enforcement to tackle the growing issue of homelessness on the beloved Venice Beach. Without a concerted effort to address the root causes and enforce regulations, the cycle of clearing and reestablishing homeless camps will persist, and Venice Beach may struggle to reclaim its former glory.

In almost any other year, a weak economy would cripple housing. But the flash-freeze recession of 2020 corresponded with a real-estate boom, led by high-end purchases in suburbs and small towns.
Even stranger, in America’s big metros, home prices and rents are going in opposite directions. Home values increased in all of the 100 largest metros in the U.S., according to Zillow data.
But in some of the richest cities—San Jose; Seattle; New York; Boston; Austin; San Francisco; Washington, D.C.; Los Angeles; and Chicago—rent prices fell, many by double-digit percentages.
In many cases, the gap was absurdly large. In San Jose last year, home prices rose by 14 percent (the sixth-largest increase in the country) but the area’s rents fell 7 percent (the sixth-largest decline).

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, in a surprising move, has called for every US city to share the load in accommodating migrants. Facing an increasingly overwhelming influx of newcomers, Adams has proposed this radical plan as New York grapples with thousands of new arrivals each day. Ironically, his 'share the love' approach emerges while his city, a proclaimed sanctuary, struggles to maintain its pledge amidst the sheer pressure of numbers and logistical challenges. Adams' suggestions are a stark contrast to his earlier rhetoric, revealing an interesting twist in his narrative.
On the surface, this request to distribute migrants across all US cities might seem like a reasonable proposition. However, it unravels a deeper issue - the unrelenting tide of people crossing the southern border. The mayor's solution implies that New York, despite its sanctuary status, is feeling the strain from this surge, echoing the concerns of border states that have been grappling with this reality for years. Amidst his concerns about housing and resource allocation, the essence of the sanctuary city appears to be wavering, replaced by pleas for nationwide assistance.
Adding another layer of complexity to this issue is the reopening of many of the city's shuttered hotels to serve as migrant shelters. As NYC houses more and more asylum seekers, questions of sustainability and long-term implications rise. The mayor’s move serves as a poignant reminder that the immigration issue continues to strain the resources and capacities of not just border towns, but also major cities across the country.

More than half of people removed from encampments by the city of Seattle rejected the offer of shelter in 2021, according to a report from PubliCola.
According to the report, the city's Homelessness Outreach and Provider Ecosystem (HOPE) team referred 1,072 people to a shelter during the year, but only 512 people actually "enrolled" and spent at least one night there. By comparison, the city referred 815 people to shelters in 2020 and 265 spent at least one night at a shelter.
