Mountain Photography in Winter | Mountain Summit Wild Camping.
Mountain Photography in Winter | Mountain Summit Wild Camping.
Winter had arrived in Scotland's Mountains so we headed out on another overnight backpacking, wild camping and landscape photography trip to Glencoe, Scotland. We headed up the mountain to find snow on the ground and icy temperatures on the summit.
However in good conditions this spot makes for a great place to spend the evening. All the way to the summit our fingers had been crossed for some exceptional weather. Or in my case just good would do :)
After backpacking for a few hours we reached our camp site and we managed to get some stunning images of our snowy spot amongst the Glencoe mountain skyline.
In this film I talk a little bit about what sleep system I use and also some future changes that may affect the location content of my videos.
Apologies for some of the audio as I lost my little wind muff. :(

Trying the Terra Nova Southern Cross One for some winter backpacking and overnight camping during the winter.
Decided to go wild camping in the 'Eastern Mamores' in Scotland, not far from Kinlochleven. T
his area and trip has been on my to do list for ages. Was just waiting on slightly better weather window before deciding to go and explore.
The new 'Terra Nova Southern Cross 1' tent on this trip has been designed for 4 season use and just out on the market for 2016. So decided to put it through its paces at fairly high altitude in snowy and freezing Scottish mountains.
So watch along to see how I felt it performed. I do cover some of the possible negatives to this design and size of tent.
The location was amazing and looked like something from the set of 'Game of Thrones' and was just waiting on the 'White Walkers' to appear. Although filmed in full 4K as usual, the 'GoPro Hero 4' does not do the vast scale of the scenery or how I was really viewing the experience any justice.
Hope you enjoy the film so please discuss and comment below.

Despite their modest height, walking and climbing in the Scottish mountains may be made treacherous by their latitude and exposure to Atlantic weather systems. Even in summer, conditions can be atrocious; thick fog, strong winds, driving rain and freezing summit temperatures are commonplace. The content shown in my films are just my own opinions, thoughts and as a way to record my trips. Walking and hiking in the Scottish mountains & hills can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk.
Hazards you may encounter include:
Open moorland Terrain, few distinct landmarks, Difficult navigation.
Crags and steep drops near summits.
Boggy areas.
River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.
Snow and ice on summits even in early summer.
Sudden changes in weather conditions.
Temperature decreases by 1 degree C for every 100m of ascent.
Note:
You are responsible for your own safety.
Are you fit enough to complete your chosen walk in the available time?
Ensure you have the correct clothing for the changeable Scottish weather.
Know where you are going on the walk and follow the route on your map.
At the very least carry a map & compass, survival bag, torch, whistle and small first aid kit.
Ensure you have enough food plus emergency rations.
Cold temperatures will reduce the life of your batteries.
In severe winter conditions you must carry an ice axe. You are also recommended to carry crampons.
Learn and know how to use your equipment.

Wild camping trip for the Northern Lights over Scotland during Halloween.
Having not seen many Aurora events myself, it was great to get out and see if we could witness and capture it from my local hills. It proved to be a cold, cloudy and rather blustery evening but all worthwhile in the end.
During this film I also discuss a new pot / windshield adapter plate to use with the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 which can be purchased from Flat Cat Gear through link below. Looking to do a further in depth review after having used it on a few more trips.
The Ocelot Inferno HX Kit is an adapter plate used to couple the Pocket Rocket Deluxe (and PR2) to the Sterno Inferno mug. The stove requires no modifications and can easily be converted back to the standard position in seconds.
NOTE: I had said in this film that it worked with other mugs but this particular system is only compatible with the Sterno Inferno mug and will NOT work with other HX style pots.

Another scenic backpacking and hiking section of the Cape Wrath Trail with lots of accent and decent during frequent and heavy rain showers.
But for me the trail so far has been the perfect wildcamping adventure. It was amazing to watch the storm clouds pass over the mountains as I hiked the trail.
Due to the condition of my feet and the pain I had to stop hiking earlier than I had planned for this day. It would also give me the chance to get them sorted once and far all before hiking any further.
It was nice to find a fairly flat wildcamping spot for the tent and just relax for the rest of the afternoon with some nice weather and a gentle breeze to keep the midges away.
I also discuss my Innov8 footwear and sock choice along with the Katadyn Befree water filter I have been using during this trip.
I hope you have enjoyed this backpacking trip vlog and I do plan to discuss it more in future videos covering what backpacking gear worked and what didn't.

Two day solo hike out in the Scottish Mountains.
This trip involved a hike out into the 'Loch Mullardoch Munros' where I also spent a couple of nights wild camping in my tent near the summits.
Due to the spectacular weather my plan had been to go round as many of the 12 mountain tops in the area as possible. However due to my health, this group of mountains more or less chewed me up and spat me out.

After using my new Fuji XT3 for a few weeks I decided to put together a video testing its filmmaking capability against my trusty old Gopro Hero 7 Black.
This was done using 4K in both cameras so I could see for myself how they compared but also to show you can produce films using an old GoPro without spending lots of money on the latest and greatest mirrorless camera systems.
Due to its ease of use I will more often than not use my GoPro Hero for video work, especially when out backpacking and hiking. For anybody looking to start an Outdoor, Travel or Adventure Vlog on the YouTube platform that particular camera would be my first recommendation whilst you find your feet.
Some of the new generation of mirrorless cameras such as the Fuji XT3 and Sony A7iii are very expensive. My circumstances mean that I use my camera for both video as well as my landscape photography which in turn has led me to trying hybrid cameras with good all round capabilities in both of these areas.
However over the last few years I have found my Gopro to be a dependable workhorse with ease of use, lightweight and well weather sealed. Its major downside is in its lens profiles when you are looking to capture more detailed footage of the landscape or surroundings when trying to tell your story.
However a small fix t I have used would be to record in 4K and do a slight digital crop into the image using video editing software such as Adobe Premier Pro.
But please don’t get me wrong the Fuji is a great stills camera and for me only has a few minor personal niggles in regards to its layout and filmmaking capability. Its feature list is amazing and no doubt the new Fuji XT4 will be extremely popular for content creators.
However I do feel at its price point the Sony A7iii could make a better financial choice with cheaper lens choices available coupled with its full frame sensor make it a great low light filming and astro-photography option.
Cameras used below in video production.
Sony A7iii – Samyang 18mm F2.8
Fuji XT3 – XF 18-55 F2.8 / F4

Backpacking & wild camping trip for some photography around the mountain Cul Mor in Assynt.
Landscape photography, wild camping and hiking in one of the most stunning locations in Scotland.
Beautiful, scenic, spectacular and dramatic are all words that have been used to describe Assynt, a parish situated in the North West corner of the Highlands of Scotland set amidst some of the wildest and most remote mountain and coastal scenery.
This Corbett, 'Cul Mor' has been on my radar for ages to camp at and have just been waiting for the right time to be able to visit. For once it looked like the weather was going to play ball. Did not go as planned but still a fantastic 24 hour mini adventure.
Even though things didn't go as planned it was made up for by the peace, tranquility and stunning views. It was nice to just get away for a wild camping trip with the camera to capture some images as well as testing out future potential compositions for the winter.
Below is the link to my Flickr photography page so I hope you can join me on my photography journey. As always thanks for watching and if you enjoyed my film please help my channel and remember to subscribe. Atb Ray

After several failed attempts at getting to the top of this Munro I managed to get it bagged at last.
It towers above the west side near the head of Loch Lomond, although close to the road its steep sides mean it is still a tough ascent. Amazing views down into the Loch Sloy and the dam.
Although an overcast day it was still a great walk with the cloud adding a real sense of atmosphere.
