The apostasy began to spread throughout the Holy Land infecting family after family. And yes, this push to reject the true religion reached even unto the town of Modin where Mattathias and his family dwelt. Representatives of the pagan leader Antiochus arrived in Modin and they demanded that the inhabitants burn incense to the false gods. While others were like sheep being led astray, Mattathias and his sons stood firm in the religion of their fathers. Knowing that Mattathias was an important figure in the town, the officials approached him and singled him out suggesting that he be the first to offer incense and that he and his family would be richly rewarded by the pagan king, Antiochus, if they apostatized. Mattathias proclaimed aloud that he and his family would not betray the Faith of their Fathers but both I and clansman of mine, will obey the law handed down to us. At that very moment, a fellow Jew began to come forward and was about to give incense to the false gods. Filled with a holy zeal, Mattathias rose up immediately and killed the apostate, along with all the representatives of the pagan king. Mattathias then appealed to all who would listen saying: Who loves the law? Who keeps the covenant unbroken? Come and follow me! Mattathias then fled with his family into the hill-country, leaving his possessions behind, there in the city. And that family would fight for the true Religion. Although Mattathias would soon die, his son Judas Maccabeus would lead an army of men with angels assisting in the fight against apostasy. So great a warrior was Judas that the very uprising against the pagan enemy bears his name, that it, the Maccabean revolt. Maccabeus is the Hebrew word for “hammer,” and Judas did hammer the enemy winning battle after battle even when greatly outnumbered. Judas Maccabeus would also enforce the law of the Fathers by circumcising Jewish boys that had been left unmarked, as well as putting the fear of God into any who might compromise with the evil persecutors. Judas would also take back the temple and would have it solemnly rededicated and would appoint good and holy priests to staff it. In the end, it was really one family…one family chosen by God…that brought restoration to the Jews and an end to apostasy.

I have often wondered why the lay faithful were not pictured in the first effort to climb in the vision part of the 3rd Secret of Fatima. After some experience in giving missions and working in a parish as well as coming to grips with the crisis of authority we are now in the midst of enduring, I would say it is because they are being tested, and the temptation is to lead themselves. Those in the hierarchy and religious life that take their positions seriously are in a structure that demands obedience, even the vow of obedience. Not so the laity. Since there is a crisis of authority at the very top, the laity feel it keenly. Every faithful Catholic naturally wants the ideal pope, bishop, priest and religious… the ideal parish but it is no where to be seen or found. Instead we have reoccurring scandals and failed promises. It seems to me this is why the 3rd Secret began with the image of an angel with a flaming sword: “at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!’” I would like to focus on 8 responses to give those making private judgments about those known to be climbing up this mountain. In other words, what should our response be to those who spread unfavorable reports?
