UNITY game engine TUTORIAL: PLAYER MOVEMENT comparing Character Controller VS RigidBody VS Transform
Welcome to a new section of our GAME DEVELOPERS channel.
Since we have some messages asking us specific questions, we have decided to address those questions, even if they are not yet in areas where we have produced some materials.
In this case, several people have asked us about what would be the correct way to move a character in Unity.
A very interesting question, that looking back in time, also give us quite some heavy headaches.
Why? Because there isn´t a clear better way to move a character in Unity.
Each method has advantages and disadvantages. So, depending on what you want to do, you will need to select one method or another. But if someone has to answer if there is a right way to do player movement in Unity, we will certainly try to answer the question and to show the diverse possibilities by implementing an comparing the following ways of moving a player:
0:15 Introduction
5:23 CharacterController
15:45 RigidBody Velocity
28:40 RigidBody Addforce
32:30 RigidBody MovePosition
36:30 Transform Translate
As a bonus in minute 40:00 there is how to check for the ground with SphereCasts, something needed for the transform translate movement.
To make it easy to understand, In this video we are going to compare some of the most used ones, that will allow you to exactly understand what are the results.
This is an intermediate tutorial, so we are basing that you already know your way through Unity and there so, we will not go in detail where the options are, what is the syntax of the functions that we will be using.
The test case has been done with the 2019 version of Unity, but it should work in any version.
