While researching tobaccos and techniques for the newest addition to the CAO Classic Series, the brand’s blending team—headed by Agustin Garcia and Rick Rodriguez—came across a fermentation technique from 19th century Cuba that they become so intrigued with, they decided to not only use it but to name the line for it.
The CAO Pilón draws from the common name for large piles of tobacco undergoing fermentation, and while modern day pilónes can reach 20-feet long, 10 feet wide and four to six feet high, pilónes of yesteryear were much smaller, and in this case, round.
This differing style of processing has its plusses an minuses, of course: while the process takes longer because the smaller pile generates less heat, the longer time is said to result in a greater reduction of ammonia and sugar content to the leaf, both of which improves burning and combustibility, according to General Cigar Co., which owns the CAO brand.
In a statement issued during this year’s IPCPR Convention & Trade Show, where the cigar was released, Rodriguez said that the team had been experimenting with this style of fermentation for several years, adding that while this is the first CAO project to use it, it won’t be the last.
The CAO Pilón comes in three sizes: Corona (5 1/2 x 44, $6), Robusto (5 x 52, $6.50) and Churchill (7 x 48, $7.25), each coming in 20-count boxes.

The Rare Leaf Reserve line was created to make a regular production line of cigars made from low-yield tobaccos grown on specific farms owned by Aganorsa. The cigars are Nicaraguan puros, which consist of a wrapper grown in Jalapa, a pair of Criollo ‘98 binders from two different farms in Estelí and a filler blend that is predominantly Criollo ’98, with a little Corojo ’99 also added to the mix.

The cigars will be packed in boxes of 15. Rare Leaf Reserve line will be only be available through Aganorsa Leaf Select retail partners.

J London Lavender Telephone Booth | #leemack912 Cigar Review (S10 E08).
The sixth installment in J. London’s Telephone Booth Series is on its way to stores, as the company is shipping the Lavender Telephone Booth today.
The cigar is a 5 x 50 robusto that uses a Dominican broadleaf maduro wrapper, and while the binder and filler are of undisclosed origin, the former is an olor varietal, while the filler uses criollo 98 ligero and olor viso. At the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show, Jonathan Fiant, owner of J. London Cigars, told halfwheel that the wrapper was grown on virgin soil, which had him excited for the flavor profile that this robusto will offer.
A total of 4,000 cigars have been produced, split into 800 packs of five cigars. As with the rest of the Telephone Booth Series, pricing is set at $14.80 per cigar and $73 per pack.
The company does not disclose where the cigars are made, other than Fiant saying that it is at a facility owned by a family with four generations of experience growing and processing tobacco, while the cigars were blended by “a master with over 40 years of experience in the industry.”
The Lavender joins the Blue, Orange, Pink, Red and Neon Green releases that have come out since the line’s debut in late 2022.
