Setting the hostname on systemd is quite different from setting it on a non-systemd system. With systemd, you'll use the hostnamectl command, which can set more than just the hostname.

Identity Management is the art of centrally managing user accounts on an operating system. Linux identity management used to be problematic, because the old systems, such as Network Information Services and LDAP, were either seriously lacking in security or just hard to use. FreeIPA takes LDAP, Kerberos, Network Time Protocol, and the Domain Name Service, and combines them into an easy-to-use package. It can even be used to create cross-domain trusts with Windows Active Directory domains. FreeIPA is available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS Linux, and Fedora Linux. Really, it should be in the repositories of any RHEL type Linux distro.

File permissions and directory permissions settings work the same on both Linux and Unix. To set either Linux permissions or Unix permissions, just use the chmod command. To change the default permissions settings on file that you want to create, use the umask command. This is good information both Linux systems administrators and Unix systems administrators.
Hopefully, this will help you effectively use linux and unix file permissions.

Cybersecurity is something that affects all of us, because we take care of so much of our business on-line. It affects how we do business as normal computer users, and it's also an important part of IT administration and security administration. On top of all that, is the problem of on-line privacy. And, those of us who work as either IT administrators or security administrators often find ourselves having to sell management on the idea of spending money to fund IT security upgrades. In this video, we look at an article from ZDNet that outlines some of the current problems that we have in the cybersecurity space, and what we can do about them.

Virtual Private Networks aren't always so private -- Today, the BeginLinux Guru talks about how certain virtual private network providers don't always do a good job of safeguarding your Internet privacy. Last year, NordVPN was caught in a user data leak, and today we see some Hong Kong-based VPN s have been caught leaking VPN user activity logs. We'll then look at some possible roll-your-own VPN solutions involving OpenVPN on a cloud server.

In today's Linux news, we report the upcoming death of CentOS Linux, which is a free-of-charge clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Many people have used CentOS to learn Linux administration, and many people use CentOS to run their Linux servers.
Check out my book, "Mastering Linux Security and Hardening, Second Edition". It covers Ubuntu Server and CentOS, but whatever is there for CentOS will also cover either Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Oracle Linux.
