Protests in Serbia - neither liberation nor colorful revolution
The recent protests in Serbia have imposed two opposing narratives as explanations: the mainstream media presents, as usual in the case of a leader it does not like, the struggle of the oppressed people for freedom, democracy, rapprochement with the West and human rights. Another perspective, associated more with criticism of the West, portrays the protests as a failed colour revolution. We spoke to political activist Marko Crnobrnja, a member of the Party of the Radical Left, who gave us an extremely provocative and interesting perspective on the irregularities of the Serbian elections, on President Aleksandar Vučić and his double-dealing, and on the political climate in his country. There is a small segment of Bulgarian society that is mostly made up of clients of American and other Western NGOs in Bulgaria, who continue to openly support the country's most notorious Euro-Atlanticist forces. They, of course, publicly support concepts such as "democracy," "freedom," and "human rights," and one of their leaders once famously described them as "smart and beautiful," in contrast to the rest of society. This fall, the "unintelligent" and "unattractive" will compete in Sofia, Bulgaria's capital and a bastion of pro-imperialist reactionaries. They will have the opportunity to support Vanya Grigorova, a well-known public figure in Bulgaria, a chief-adviser to one of the country's largest labor confederations, and an honest class fighter. Boyan Stanislavski discusses what this means for Bulgaria's political process with two Bulgarian political analysts, Bozhin Traykov and Arto Artinian.

"On the Barricades" - s04e30
On the Barricades tackles the issue of human rights in its current episode with labour activist Pat Byrne being the guest of the host Maria Cernat.
Pat Byrne distinguishes between human rights which provide for basic material, economic and social security and what usually is understood as human rights - the type of rights, which are often used as a weapon in international relations by the dominant players against those who try to exist in the world with higher degrees of both independence and illiberalism. Maria Cernat outlines other contradictions with regards to social and economic rights - the West-dominated international institutions, such as the IMF have been undermining the ability of local players of the Third world to act independently on the international scene as the IMF has been imposing privatization of basic resources, including water. The industry of charity and international aid also appears to be dubious as it is often funded by the very same forces that plunder the resources and wealth of the developing world.
What comes out of a critical perspective on human rights is that they are a vague concept, which can be weaponized when necessary, but which is neither respected, nor applied in an authentic way even within the territory of those who use it as a tool of international relations.

Hey there!
The Barricade is a leftist media outlet set up by a group of activists and journalists from around Eastern Europe. This channel is part of our efforts to provide analyzes, news as well as opinions and comments from and on our region, often disregarded by the West (including the Left) in a very colonial manner. One of our tasks is to confront such an approach as well as many other naïve and superficial views about Eastern Europe and its left. It has history, experience and competence to participate in the global debates. And we're doing this via this channel and its flagship show "On the barricades" hosted by Boyan Stanislavski and Maria Cernat.

This is the third segment of Boyan Stanislavski's in-depth conversation with US peace activists Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright, both of whom are well-established and well-known. In this segment, we discuss how the war in Ukraine is affecting domestic American affairs, as well as how events on the front lines may affect the upcoming presidential elections next year. We also discuss the role of the media and how peace activists are brutally censored and must purchase advertisements in order to get their message across in corporate outlets.

”On the Barricades” - s04e13
This is the second part of our interview with Russian political scientist Stanislav Byshok, who decided to sit down with the hosts of "On the Barricades" and discuss the crisis and how the Russian public perceives the situation overall, despite recent harsh measures against critical voices imposed by the authorities. In the previous segment, we discussed how, in general, the initial reactions to the invasion shifted rather quickly. In this episode, we discuss the sanctions and the massive campaign to cancel Russia and Russians in the Western world.
Are any of the West's hopes even realistic? Could deficits in Coca-Cola or iPhones really cause a public outpouring of rage against the government and the president? Are the Russians deeply offended by the strong reactions in the majority of European countries? How has life in Russia changed since the 24th of February?
This and more will be covered in the second installment of our conversation with Stanislav Byshok, which will be broadcast on YouTube, Rumble, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch. You can also listen to our podcast on Spotify and SoundCloud, and it will be available on other platforms soon!

In today's installment, we discuss the Russian drone fragments that apparently landed on Romanian soil close to the ports of Reni and Izmail which were heavily bombed by Russian artillery. We also discuss a shocking documentary by Recorder.ro about the worrying state of Romania's army beyond slogans and encouraging statements.

In the winter of 2023, all hopes of pro-European Poles seemed poised to materialize as Donald Tusk and his party garnered enough votes to potentially form a governing coalition. However, the victory was not decisive, as the party that had governed since 2015, Law and Order, remained the top choice among voters.
With a fragile majority and in a rather problematic coalition, Tusk set out to swiftly resolve nearly a decade of extreme right-wing rule through often hasty and illogical moves lacking in strategy. Poland experienced a period of extreme instability, with scandals bordering on the absurd, undermining the last remnants of trust and political legitimacy.
Moreover, the Poles were the ones who had helped Ukrainians the most since the 2022 invasion. In a gesture of generosity that will remain a positive episode in the history books, Poles mobilized to welcome millions of migrants, despite the anti-immigrant propaganda they had been exposed to. However, now Polish farmers are in revolt. These protests add to the instability caused by the coalition's rushed measures. We invited Polish feminist activist Małgorzata Kulbaczewska-Figat to speak to us about these issues as well as the hopes of restoring the right to abortion in Poland.

In this episode, Maria Cernat discusses the situation in Romania, which has become slightly more interesting for the first time in many years. The government's decision to regulate the gambling market is the reason for this. This provoked some dissatisfaction on the part of the capital circles linked to this branch of business and Maria comments on how the back and forth between the Romanian authorities and those circles happened. In the second half of the discussion, the hosts briefly discuss the AUR, a right-wing populist party that has been gaining popularity recently.

While millions of people around the world are fighting Covid-19 and the aftermath of the pandemic, another type of disease is weighing on our society – the plague of fascism, xenophobia, and racism. On 13.02.2021, far-right groups and organizations once again gathered to propagate their misanthropic ideas undisturbed in the center of Sofia at the so-called Lukovmarch. That is why, while the authorities shut their eyes to this shame to the public once again, the supporters of freedom and solidarity, expressed our disagreement and resistance through protest. Giving a platform and thus legitimating inhumane, dangerous, and destructive ideas like these, represented by the marches of hate and the propaganda they spread, are unacceptable.
