Minute Memo #177 - Would Obama Win a 3rd Term?
Good afternoon, I’m still reporting on politics.
Six weeks ago, when President Obama was traveling in Ethiopia, he told the press:
"I actually think I'm a pretty good president. I think if I ran, I could win.”
This set off a mini firestorm of paranoia in certain far right circles that Obama might be thinking about ways to make that happen – a la President Nixon in 1973-74.
Not surprisingly, a subsequent survey by McLaughlin & Associates found that voters have soundly rejected any such option. The survey question was:
"Do you want to see the Constitution amended so that Barack Obama could run for a third term as president?"
Those polled overwhelmingly said “No” by an overall 77-17% margin.
Democrats said no by 59 to 32%.
Even African Americas, rejected the idea by a 43 to 42 margin.
Among women, 73% voted No.
Among men, 82% No.
Among Hispanics, 67% voted No.
Even among under 40s, 69% No.
This, despite the latest Gallup Poll which still has Obama polling with a 46% favorable rating.
According to poll analyst Rob Schmidt, as quoted in the Washington Examiner:
"It is quite apparent that voters do not want to give Obama a third term. [He] is beloved by his base, but most seem ready to move on,"
I’m still reporting from Washington. Good day.
