Good morning, I’m still reporting on Texas School Board Votes 6-1 to Remove Charlie Brown Bible Verses Good morning, I’m still reporting on the supreme authority of the 1st Amendment. Could all this just be some sort of bad dream? A single Bible verse – not only the most-cited verse as the root of our Christmas celebration – but recited in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special by the cartoon character Linus – is now too politically incorrect to be displayed on the door of a middle school clinic during Christmas time? Well, if you were in attendance at the Killeen Independent School District Board meeting last night you would have seen 6 of the 7 School Board members vote to support the actions of the school principal who ordered clinic aide, Dedra Shannon to either remove the Bible verse, or the entire door wrapper would have to be removed. This vote came in spite of a letter yesterday from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton urging the district to: “… rescind this unlawful policy, apologize to Ms. Shannon and move back into compliance with state and federal laws.” Only one member of the School Board voted to restore the door wrapper display of Ms. Shannon’s, the President of the School Board, Terry Delano. “I believe that we have come to a place in our nation where we’re taking Christ out of everything, in this case, the very word Christmas, Christ-mas, and it concerns me that someday we won’t even be able to say that,” said Delano after the meeting. Attorney General Paxton says that this is exactly the type of situation that the 2013 “Merry Christmas” law was intended to protect. The law was intended to stop the growing mis-interpretations of the wall of separation between church and state concept. Many now believe that it means that government can regulate how citizens can show support for their various religious beliefs. But such is not the case. The concept, according to President Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists on Jan. 1, 1802, falls under the protections of the 1st Amendment which guarantees “the free exercise of religion.” Here’s the exact wording: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Freedom of religion was considered the most important right because it was the first one mentioned! What part of “Congress shall make no law….” is difficult to understood here? In other words, it is not a 2-way street. When the people are given absolute authority, any law can only strip away at that supreme authority. The 1st Amendment is all the protection needed. Ms. Shannon’s attorney, Jonathan Saenz with Texas Values, said he will continue to pursue the matter: “The Killeen … School Board is on an island of their own, and they’re … legally in a very dangerous place, and we are going to continue to look at all our legal options….” I’m Still reporting from Washington and Merry Christmas. The Emerson College survey found Cruz 29%, Trump 28%, Rubio 25, Kasich 9, and Carson 4%. The Emerson survey was done Sunday through Tuesday and consisted of polling 446 likely primary voters with a 4.6% margin of error. A poll released yesterday by the Univ. of Texas and the Texas Tribuse showed Cruz ahead of Trump by 8 points. Cruz 37%, Trump 29%, Rubio 15%, Bush 6%, Kasich 5% and Carson 4%. The poll was conducted the day before the South Carolina primary and had a margin of error of 3.5%. The difference in these polls is critical. Only the latest one had any chance of measuring the quickly-building bandwagon effect that Trump’s win in South Carolina has had. I’m Still reporting from Washington. Good day.
