In this edition of Proto Watch, Jon takes a look at the pre-Super FX 3D tank combat game X (also referred to as SNESGlider or NESGlider). This proof of concept demo was made by Argonaut Software and shown to the heads of Nintendo in Japan back in 1991. The response was so tremendous that Nintendo allocated time and money to Argonaut in order to create the Super FX chip to facilitate the rendering 3D flat shaded polygonal graphics that was used to power Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, Vortex and the other 3D SNES games for the system. Without this prototype, Star Fox would not have existed.
