Weta Digital’s software arm is acquired by Unity - This could be HUGE for Apple Gaming! Unreal and Unity have been the dominant game engines on Apple’s platforms for a while, frameworks that make game development start from a much higher level rather than coding from scratch. And of course, since the Apple V Epic lawsuits, Epic’s Unreal engine is less likely to be playing nice with Apple. But now the other team, Unity has bought Weta Digital’s software arm for 1.63bn which could be insane. Weta was founded by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson as a creative house for VFX artists, working on projects as far back as 1994 and inclusions work on Contact, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, the X-Men franchise, Marvel’s Avengers and Iron Man 3, and the DCEU movies with recent projects including the Suicide Squad, Eternals and The Batman. So it's incredibly exciting to hear that much of this technology could be rolled into the next generation of the unity engine, bringing even more immersive games to the Mac and iOS. We’ve had M1 Macs now for a full year - and to be honest its been a hell of a year - We started out with that event that had all the vague graphs seemingly specifically to bait the pc fanboys into talking about the M1, including Linus Sebastian at Linus Tech Tips, calling the event a slow motion dumpster fire, followed by a slightly sheepish “Apple Destroyed my expectations” - Praising everything from the general speed to being completely stunned by how well Rosetta 2 was able to run X86 software. The tests kept coming and time after time even Apple’s fanless MacBook Air was demolishing anything even remotely in its class in Geekbench and real world tests. Then, in Spring the iMac got the first redesign of the Apple Silicon era, heavily referencing the first iMac in its friendly and light colour schemes, as well as getting drastically thinner to boot. M1 also came to the iPad Pro, giving us the first taste of MiniLED displays in something costing less than 5K. WWDC came and went without any hardware, contrary to popular belief and we had to wait until October for our next taste - and what a taste it is - the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros with genuinely insane performance in a bigger enclosure, complete with a suite of ports, new cameras and display tech and a design that again references the history of the PowerBook G4. Still to come we have overhauls of the MacBook Air introducing the M2, the larger iMac that’s expected to arrive in Q1 2022 with M1 Pro and M1 Max options, and perhaps our first look at FaceID on the Mac. The Mac mini is also expected to pick up a redesign that nods to the original G4 Mac mini with its perspex top and aluminium sides. That will just leave the Mac Pro, and while we’ve heard it could have up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores, we have no idea right now if it will be in any way user upgradable, but it does look like it will use multiple M1 Max SOCs in parallel, perhaps in an elongated Mac mini style chassis.
