However, the original meaning of these terms was one of derision. The term pagan meant "country dweller" and was used even in pre-Christian Rome as a way to identify an uneducated, backward, superstitious rural dweller. The term was extended into Christian times and was used by Christians to refer to someone who was behind the times and still practiced "inferior" polytheist or folk religions. The same is true for the term "Heathen." The heath was an area outside of populated areas and someone who dwelt here was a Heath-en or Heath-dweller. The connotation was similar to that of "pagan" meaning someone who was behind the times, uneducated, superstitious, etc... While moderners may or may not know the original meaning of these words, perhaps the context is still under-realized. These terms did not simply mean someone who was a polytheist or someone valiantly choosing to defy the Christian authorities. Such a context would be a noble one. No, these terms would be equivalent to calling someone a redneck, trailer-trash, hillbilly, inbred hick. Our pre-Christian ancestors had no such names for themselves. They did not call themselves anything. They just simply worshipped Nature as they experienced it. The idea that one has to confine themselves to any particular description was invented by Christianity to distinguish themselves from traditional practitioners.
