The ongoing saga of uncooperative bears (read description)
Susan sent me this, last night, and again I had to laugh (the ongoing saga of uncooperative bears): Maddy and Frank fall asleep in the grass everyday. When I call them to come for supper they realize that they haven’t gone swimming yet so instead of coming for supper they head for the pond, and Jennifer who has been swimming all day can’t resist one more swim. Supper is late everyday.
Some of our long time followers sent us a massive bucket of honey for the bears to share! Check this out. Pretty sure this was a thumbs up…errr, PAWS up by them all!

So many of you have been asking how Leo is...or how Jim is doing. It would be a lie to say everyone is “just fine”. The loss of Jimbo has been quite a blow to everyone and grieving is a process...but I think that you will just all love this video. Probably our longest video ever at 11 minutes in length, it is so much fun that when Susan sent it to me, I grinned throughout the entire thing...watch until the end, it just keeps getting more fun! Jim did have to be careful not to let Leo play with him too much IN the water. Leo is about 900 lbs and you wouldn’t want him to be able to accidentally drown you! :) Leo is a Syrian brown bear and is 23 years old.

Many of you ask about hibernation this time of year. Many bears in captivity do not hibernate. They do slow down a great deal, eat much less, and sleep a lot more, but most do still get up and go out each day. They all have access to an inside den area where they can snuggle up with each other, or on hay - whatever they want to do. Out of all the bears, Frankie is our most "hibernating" bear. This is Leo being all cute and whatnot.

Not crazy about the music the phone put with this one, but what a cute video it created! FYI, this is the last few days to make a tax deductible donation for 2021! Please consider us as a recipient of your kindness and giving! We also have just 8 calendars left, so grab them while you can!

Many well meaning and kind people want to come and volunteer to work wit the bears here at the sanctuary. We just want to make clear that NO ONE goes in with the bears, except for Jim and Susan (no, not even on private tours).
You also must be a licensed NYS rehabilitator to even volunteer on the property.
The relationship Jim and Susan have with the bears has been cultivated over a lifetime spent with them. It’s built on trust and kindness and constant care.
Jim himself says that if anyone offered for him to go inside an enclosure with THEIR bears, he would turn them down in a heartbeat.
The bears are wonderful with Jim and Susan but no one else could expect to have that relationship. So while the bears seem docile and friendly, they are wild animals and if you have no relationship with them, then frankly you’d be nuts to want to step into an enclosure with one.
What we share with you here is a very, very special relationship. No one else could expect to have that with the bears upon just meeting them.
