Do you think you can tell instruments apart from each other? What if you can only listen to the timbre? It turns out to be harder than you think. Test yourself in this video!

Correction: it's not the hammers that silence piano strings, of course, it's the dampers. :-)

Some more needle ice this winter (2012-13)... this time a couple of cold days added up to these 2-tier structures. A lot of leaves and rocks and such pushed up, a sweet miniature canopy of moss, and sprouting seed lifted into the air.

Alvin Lucier: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alvin_Lucier
In 1969 Alvin Lucier released a track called "I am Sitting in a Room". It demonstrated how the acoustics of the space can be imprinted on audio broadcast into that space over and over by recording each iteration as you go. This is my humble version of the effect using a quote from Alvin Lucier himself. (I am calling it "the Lucier Effect" here, but that appellation is my own invention.) Lucier passed away December 1, 2021.
The original is available here: http://www.lovely.com/titles/cd1013.html
There are versions online. I'm not sure if these are sanctioned by the publisher; let me know if not: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAxHlLK3Oyk
Quotation is from: Alvin Lucier, 'Careful listening is more important than making sounds happen: The propagation of sound in space' (c. 1979), in Lucier, Reflections: Interviews, Scores, Writings (Cologne: MusikTexte, 1995) 430-38
